So doing a little bit of investigating, does anyone have any idea what tail light housings are in the rear?
These are for sure not an option anywhere along the road from VW?

If no ones pointed it out, they were 1968 Chevy Impala station wagon. Turned upside down of course. |

Lapped valves, bead blasted chambers, a couple of inserts, and we have a solid dual port. I'll check numbers again when I've ran it a few times.
Note: Compression numbers shown are on a weak test battery, and about a quart low of oil, I believe to see higher numbers in months to come when motor has ran a bit.
Rotary bit time next, gotta clear the split-case transaxle for this big ole engine!
Edit: It would help if one would run the valves prior to testing compression...numbers to be ran again, doh! _________________ The Bus Barn Ltd. Co.

I was foremost thrilled, then happy to see the numbers. Wish I had ran the valves prior to running the battery down, but it gives insight. I'll check compression once the engine is installed, running, and hopefully purring.
It's amazing what breaking down the heads, blasting them, valves lapped, to see Brazilian Pistons and cylinders, TRW valves, clean solid cylinder heads, I'm hoping it'll push my pile around town just fine.
Fingers crossed, just bought a rotary bit, going to clear this transaxle in a couple days.
Note to remove and replace the starter bushing, it's easier to do with engine removed?
Also throwing pennies into the wishing well, hope I hear from Gerson one of these days.
Thanks for tagging along guys, _________________ The Bus Barn Ltd. Co.

Easier to just put the engine just into place that the flywheel get a little stuck and hand turn it with plugs out. Let the flywheel cut what is required. Move the engine in a slight bit more and turn it again, repeat till the engine is all the way in. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

Starter bushing is much easier to R&R with no engine in place.
Be very careful while grinding the tranny bellhousing. Magnesium flakes are really, really flammable. If you accidentally bump one of the steel trans mount screws and make a spark, you might be in a whole new world of flame and pain.
Take it easy, and be careful. Clean up your work space regularly.
Then take the pile of mag flakes outside and start them with a torch at night. Good fun if done with careful foresight. _________________ nothing |

This is usually how I do it. Time consuming, but safe. And you can still save the pile of mag flakes for some pyrotechnic fun. _________________ nothing |

My process:
Jack motor up, lined up push in until tight, hardware not long enough to tighten down. So, using a 3/4 drive with a 30mm socket I was manually cranking the engine over, getting a little leadway. Finally had enough in to begin tightening engine bolts. After a few cranks, trouble brewed once I rounded off the pulley nut. I know, I'm so thrilled.
So, as seen in the photo below, I pulled the motor back out and have begun to use a rotary bit to create the needed clearance. Luckily the flywheel grooved all the needed areas. Main issues are the bolt holes inside the transaxle.
Little by little.
It sure is going to suck having to remove that pulley nut in the future.

Not really. Can use a plumber wrench or weld a large nut to the rear side of it.
Guessing you did not use a 6 point socket. 12 point sockets are more likely to round off the points of the bolts. Plus next time try not to shove the engine in so hard while turning it. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

Definitely a 12 point socket, I'll see if picking up a 6 point socket helps, there's still decent meat on it but not with the resistance of trying to cut the transaxle with, plus it'll help having one for the future.
Thanks E&B. _________________ The Bus Barn Ltd. Co.

I always use a sharp chisel and chisel the bottom high spots then the rest is eazy peezy. Flywheel will clear the path. _________________ GFK

Well I finally got the dual port installed into the split-case transaxle, time-consuming but nothing unbearable.
One day I'll land a hand-crank and the needed dog (starting) nut, until then I'll just use the starter
Now visible to the right of the engine, I am needing to do metal replacement work on the battery tray and the rear corner. Metal for this area is very pricey, and not my focus for right now, though much needed.
What tin is missing behind the doghouse? With the 73 engine and the protruding cooling air "cone/flap" what's my solution here?
FWIW, I am trying to sell the current 55-59 bus pan I have from Klassicfab, listed in the classifieds, to generate money to purchase the correct pan for my application. _________________ The Bus Barn Ltd. Co.

Alrighty, located #'s 3,4,6 needed for the purring kitten (to be determined) in the back half of the truck.
Also getting a good Bosch 12v starter with the need of ordering a 6v to 12v starter bushing.
For the birthday, I bought a couple "necessities" off the classifieds, the manual is a bit rough, but the sales brochures are clean, vibrant, and just oozing awesomeness.

When you get the boot, you gotta store things really where you wouldnt like for them to be, and Im hoping this thing isnt hidden and neglected under a tarp for very long.
Even knowing it sat outside, forgotten for 30 years, with the work Ive done thus far, its almost gutting know that its back outside...
My name is Sam, and I have a problem _________________ The Bus Barn Ltd. Co.
