Well today was bittersweet, to say the least. Finally got all the buses to their new respective homes, and had a cruise in the single to its new resting place.
Kicker is, at the very last 1/4 mile of the total 10 miles to the shop, catastrophe took place. I didn’t witness any loud bangs or ka-booms but the motor is officially locked up in the single cab. Upon stalling on the street, it was leaking oil out of both valve covers (which I had just installed new seals) and once cooled, the oil smelled burnt.
Also upon adjusting the shift linkage bracket, I have no 3rd or 4th gear, so I drove in second the whole 10 miles (about 30mph). Doesn’t look good for the dual port, though with my intermittent issues, I do believe the warning signs were saying that something was amiss internally.
I’ll be tearing apart this motor again, and this time splitting the case. Looks like the ‘59 will be getting a IRS transaxle and a 1776 in the upcoming months.
Bummed but blessed. At least I have a very nice, roomy shop to assess my future expenses.

Bummer about the motor, I'm sure it's nice having all your vehicles under one roof! |

2nd gear at 30 MPH might have been a little too much for your engine. I don't recall the gearing exactly, but you were likely in the very top of acceptable RPM range for the engine, and that is only supposed to be for short periods while accelerating.
I may be wrong, but you may have just over-reved that thing and killed it. _________________ nothing |

Aren't you the guy with the not working oil light? Don't know how you did your v-cover seals but it's real easy to have the seal lip slide up on the bottom if you don't get the cover centered. No blown engine would make the covers leak unless you were running nitro. Could be it just lost it's oil. Will it rotate today? |

If they weren't installed perfectly, then the engine was revved to 5K for ten miles, they might start leaking. Alot. _________________ nothing |

So I've been dragging ass on the motor tear down, still really needing to finish organizing the shop before getting into all of that.
I've been finishing up the welds and primering the rear right corner, it's going to look awful nice compared to the original one on the left...
I decided to play around with Bondo to cover up the ugliness of rot on the passenger side skin rot that's been going strong for some time. I intend to replace the rear quarters on both sides at some point, so I took this experience as time to familiarize myself with working with it, learning how to read highs and lows in the body and such, because I'm going to have to skim on my Westy in a couple spots, as well as on dad's bus in the future.
A much better improvement, and again, it was to make me feel better looking at this thing in the shop since it isn't currently moving anytime soon.

Well finally tearing into the dual port engine, I discovered the issue.
This is showing the connecting rod on cylinder two, somehow the bearing between the rod and the crankshaft began to overlap and got super hot, locking the connecting rod onto the crank, preventing it from having the proper slop to rotate correctly.
Overtightened flywheel, crankshaft pulley?! What would’ve caused this issue? All other rods had their proper bearings intact, though cylinder 3 was loose to the touch. I didn’t measure any of the clearances prior to disassembly.
As it sits:
The case looks fine, the cam shaft looks fine. Lifters, oil pump and drive gear, etc, all seemingly fine. Again I haven’t measured anything.
The heads still look very nice from where I blasted and lapped the valves. All the cylinder head bolts were tight upon removal, and the rocker assemblies and valves were in good standing.
Something odd took place here. Hey you guys who’ve been doing this for decades, what happened here?!?

Running the engine too hard, hot and worn out will cause that.
Once that bearing is galled to the crankshaft, the tangs to keep the bearing from spinning get sheared off. Then it is all downhill from there.... _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

Good time to upgrade to a counterweighted crankshaft. You can go with 69, or 74, or 78 mm stroke. The bigger the stroke the more torque. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

Looking for some input guys, here are some internal pics of the bearing bores in the crankcase.
I have been doing my damnedest to measure the clearances and to what I can determine, everything is standard and in spec.
I’ve bolted the two case halves and was unable to see in protruding light, the bores seem to be nice and round. I’ve done the fingernail scribe method of looking for case wear inside the bores and everything feels nice and smooth.
I’ve also taken the crankshaft case bearings and inserted them back into the case half, looking for fitment, and they “snap” in tight, and the thrust in the bearing along the case bearing next to the flywheel is solid.
I am needing to start getting this thing buttoned up, purchasing case bearings, counterweighted crank, items for crank, etc... and don’t wish to miss any precautions nor overlook items being a newbie.
Any tips guys? _________________ The Bus Barn Ltd. Co.

That case looks like it needs an align-bore before moving forward. Purchase your bearings and crank to fit after machining. I don't think I would trust that everything is ok after a bearing mishap like that. Drill and tap oil galleys to ensure you get all the crud and possible bearing pieces that could of made their way in there. |

Just to follow up, I took the engine case to a friend of a friend, and it has been deemed that the thrust is at its wear limit and has now been considered a wasted block.
So back to the drawling board.
FWIW, I also have an ad for the Single Cab for sale in the Classifieds, entertaining offers.
Hope everyone is well, show season is here!!! _________________ The Bus Barn Ltd. Co.

Should you get a second opinion? I've seen some pretty thick fixes for the thrust. Maybe call Paradise Motorsports and ask Scott whut-up 760-744-9081. |

I hope you haven't lost interest because of the engine mishap. Man...I've been where you are and I know it's frustrating, but that SC is too darn cool to not finish it. |
The single is up on the chopping block. I genuinely love the truck, but I have other important opportunities that I want to pursue, and this money will give me the chance to finally go for it, which is long overdue.
I am going to be replacing the single with a double cab bay window bus for my business, so though heartbroken over selling the '59, I am grateful to have learned so much, been fortunate enough to love and save this thing, and get me in position to chance some dreams.
I even have dreams to buy it back one of these days, if anyone ever wants to buy it...it's a solid truck for $10k, I thought it would've sold in a matter of a couple days and I'd have been sitting here mopey panning America for a replacement.
Thank all of you good guys for following me on this journey, it has been a lot of fun, I really appreciate all the comradery. _________________ The Bus Barn Ltd. Co.

Man, I thought I followed up with these ages ago.
I ended up selling the single to a well-known VW guy. And to all of those who tagged along with my attempts of resurrecting the 59, I'd like for you all to know it's getting a complete overhaul.
A rotisserie build, proper repairs and body work, it is going to be sick. When all these progressions start, I'll toss what photos I'm sent over to this thread, as I'd really like to keep the story of the truck going here on the Samba.
Thanks guys,
