I'm very interested in this car.
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=2016254

I can't really get to look at it. Any suggestions on an early Porsche expert to look it over. I'm wanting a genuine car with no or little rust. This car was on eBay last June and made 26k and didn't sell. From what I can see it looks good and can't explain why it ended at 26 k. Something must not be right. I particularly like the option to paint it Golden Green thus my interest.

Any suggestions of a reputable shop or mechanic.

Thanks Lyndon

Hmmmm.... $39,600.....really?

I am no Porsche expert per-se.....but I know my way around aircooled cars.

Depending on who you use for value.....for Instance Hagerty lists about 24-ish for fair, 35-ish for good and up to 48-ish for excellent. It also lists a +10% multiple for a 5 speed and a -10% multiple for a glass rear window on a targa.

As I have opined in the past....I think some of these values for Porsche are a bit inflated...but thats just my opinion. They are what the market is willing to pay.

Right off the bat....it makes no difference what the paint # WAS. Its a different color now.

The most probable reason for a lot of value deduction is the fact that it was repainted. It is probably a reflection of the quality of that paint job....combined with the REAL reason for why it may have been repainted.

People with money to burn aside.....I mean....ask yourself.....how many people wake up one morning and decide to take an otherwise EXCELLENT condition (if not perfect)....classic Porsche.....and change the color?

To do that at a high quality level.....the entire car must be stripped. Engine out, trunk liner, wire harnesses and all peripherals in the trunk and interior out....glass and gaskets out....a fair chunk of the suspension taken off.....door panels off....if you are doing a REAL quality paint job.

Gaskets and some trim parts rarely survive that. They then get replaced. Are they factory part #s and factory quality? Thats a lot or cash.....and until the past 8-10 years or so....912s did not carry the value to be worth that level of cost.

So.....one must ask.....was it wrecked or rusted and stripped for repair when they decided to paint it a different color?

Also that description does not say much about engine and trans and brake condition or mileage. Just "drives perfectly".
One mans "drives perfectly" may be another mans "WTF".

A couple observations....is that the paint unded where the license plate was.....is a different color....suggesting faded paint that has been buffed out. Not a horrible thing.....but suggests that other items like rubber, plastic etc...have suffered as well.

In the engine compartment...crappy aftermarket Fram fuel filter....Serrated non factory clamps on the vent hoses at the top of the picture.....missing air vent hoses on each side noted from open tubes near the cross member in the lower part of the picture.....snd what appears to be surface rust on the firewall area near the hatch hinge on the left side.
Some fading of paint noted on the front end as well.

You would need a lot more and higher resolution pictures to get more money from me. Just some onservations.

It looks like a very nice car either way....but betting there is more here than meets the eye. Ray

Contact modernspecialist.com in Long Beach, CA. tel. (562)4238431. They have been around for over 60 years. Beware of lipstick and polish it covers up a lot of problems. Have the seller take it to them or pay them to go to it.
