Before Christmas a friend of mine asked to assemble an engine for him. So I began looking it over today, I'm a procrastinator. We've got a case that's cut second oversize .040 and thrust between +1and +2 and a standard crank polished. He let everything sit so it needs cleaning including removing the #3 main needs to come back off the crank for a thorough cleaning. I'll be checking all the measurements just to make sure everything's in order. I also cleaned the case up at the car wash. Look real close you can see corrosion in the bottom of the case, not good but I've seen worse.

I used wheel cleaner with a small amount of acid on my case. I think it was etching wheel cleaner, It will remove that corrosion

I took seven more generators over to the rebuilders last Thursday, waiting to hear back from him. When I do your engine will be finished, it's that close.

Sweet! I think I'll just call it good and drive it--brakes aren't that important right?

Using the split number two main as a tool to verify crank is fully seated on dowels. This prevents ruined or crushed bearings, it works take note.

This cam bearing needs attention as sometimes it extends into the oil trough, you could trim it to fit, this was ok.

Spent some today getting this short block built.

Install the relief valves, here's the tool notice the scars further up on the knurled area, it's because of corrosion caused by water in the oil, more on that later.

First shine a bright light and check the bore, you can clean up slight pitting or siezure marks, you'll want to verify it slides freely in the bore.

There's the plunger and there it is installed on the tool

I used a Q tip to make the valve slide nicely, then spring, the big screw with crush washer and a tiny dab of permatex to insure leak free seal.

Here's evidence of more water damage, probably a lot of short trips never getting the engine up to full temp, maybe no thermostat that compounds it as well. But the damage is there, all we can do is try to make a leak free seal.

Looks bad but the actual sealing surface is still intact. I'm going to cheat just a little and use this product which I know works and it cleans up easy next oil change. I've heard it called " pretty girl" look at the pic.

What's the expected HP gain on that drain cover? If it's significant I may have to get one for myself. Very Happy

I have heard that your buddies breed can bite a broom handle in two. Is that true?

Thanks for posting the build pics. I haven't built an engine in years. So this helps to keep my mind fresh. and is a good reference when the time comes again.

Have a great day.

Brilliant!, now you have someone to blame when a nut or some other shiny part goes missing or gets left out.

I didn't see any mention of the round metal plug at the back of the cam in the block, just wanted to make sure it wasn't forgotten.

FWIW, the heating element on a coffee maker is sufficient enough for heating the gears.

Looks good though.
