I see one end of the discribed wire, its connected to the body, wheres the other end of the wire end up? Where it ends will give a clue of where it should terminate
my Bentley book only goes up to 1987 vans, not your 1988 van. . it shows 1987 vanagon instrument ground point #81 and #30 which handle most of the dash area ground points. both these points should have multible wires attached to them. #30 is near the fuse panel,

well is it stock or added??? is the stud welded tothe body, if so it would probably be a stock ground stud. is the ring terminal same as the other ring connectors in the van, simular crimp to the others, brown wire identical to other brown wires? if so it is probably stock.
do all the van accesories work, map light, radio, lighter, dash lamps, gages, fan, etc...?
was this van optioned out? power mirrors, windows, other accesories?
my thought is it probably is not the ac as the ac systems didnt have anthing mounted near the floor there. But as far as I know ac units were dealer installed so there could be variations in how they got installed.

http://www.benplace.com/dash.htm
the above link has many photos of a van with dash removed, click on some of them, they inlarge. I saw no evidence in these photos of the ground stud as your van has. The van in these photos is a water cooled, with a tach and digital clock, which I think means it is a 1986 or later model, it has camper and AC and manual window cranks. Mirrors appear non powered. someone else might be able to narrow down the year even more.

A little dark in the garage for a pic but the '90 Carat has that ground point
Looks to be part of the radio harness?

Yep, stock ground point for the stereo. Not sure if it came on line in later years or if it was always there. |

The 1986 Bentely wire diagram shows radio ground at #20, also grounded at #20 are instrument cluster, switch grounds, heater control ground emergency flasher ground. Should be more than one wire on #20. (in 1986 anyway)
While wire was cut, did you still have these things functional just prior to dash coming apart?
Does anyone have a later edition of the Bentwly and will check the wire section for if this ground is listed????? Each years schematic is preceded by a list of ground points look for that list, there's about ten or so listed. These ground points are shown as circled numbers on the diagrams.
good luck, lets try to see when or if VW added this ground lug????????????
looks like its not on the early diagrams, and the benplace photos on prior post show it not on a 1986 or newer van, but does appear on this posts 1988 van. lIghted gearshift knob ground??? _________________ Help Prevent VW Engine Fires, see this link.....Engine safety wire information

Your correct, sure looks stock.
So is it really for radio? Thats a long way from the rest of radio harness, and prior vans used ground point 20 for radio, and that aint 20. Where are the other ground wires? Is that an absolute confirmation it is radio ground? Wonder why it was moved, seperated? maybe, interesting! _________________ Help Prevent VW Engine Fires, see this link.....Engine safety wire information

Here is another photo now that it's a little more light out there!
It is part of the map light, lighter and radio harness.
The ground terminates on that harness in the next connector toward the left side of the van from the cigar lighter. I am not certain what that connector is.
You can see the terminals for the map light near the shifter boot in my picture. The connector for the lighter is near it on the floor.
The ground you are looking for plugs into the back of the connector that I am holding in the pic. _________________ '87 WBWE FAS Gen V |

I don't think my '86 A/T Westy has that ground, like your '88 does _________________ .... |

anyone have an1988 Bentley wire diagram? Please check on if this is shown on diagram? wonder why it was changed? if connected to radio, was issue interference from other grounds attached to same ground point? Seems to me they wouldnt have changed it with out good reason, changes cost money, was old prior ground point #20 deleted on 1988 vans or was it retained when this ground post was added? the diagram ground point list should answer this. _________________ Help Prevent VW Engine Fires, see this link.....Engine safety wire information

From 1986 to 1987, radio and map light grounded "in instrument panel wiring harness".
From 1988 onward, radio and map light grounded "behind instrument panel, center".

Ground point 20 turned into 81 beginning in 1987 (according to Bentley).
So, no, that ground point did not disappear; it was merely renumbered. VW simply split the radio ground off from the instrument panel harness. _________________ ~Kamz
