So I have read in the ghia forum, cause I own a ghia too, and all those guys are scared sh*tless about adjusting their spring plates because they are loaded. As I am preparing to install my lowered spring plates on my bus I wonder, Am I going to loose a limb when I try and remove my old spring plates or is this a type1 thing? _________________ Oil Capital Air Cooled

you aren't going to loose a limb, even if you had a limb in the way. But keep your hands clear of that plate when you pull it loose. Put a large screwdriver behind it where you can get some leverage and work it out. It will let got about 1/2" at most once it clears the lip and that's it. Wear safety googles, make sure the bus is secure on jackstands, etc. |

The plates don't move that far. I also was scared the first time because people made it sound like it was going to spin like propeller but this is not true. What I do is push the spring plate up with a jack til it is off the stop then use a screwdriver wedged under the plate at the bottom to guide it passed the stop as you lower the jack. Once it is unloaded scribe the end casting so you will know where the original possition was and then use two screwdrivers to pry it off. It is really easy. _________________ Why buy what you can build.

its really not scary at all. A bus spring plate is about suprising as opening a can of biscuits and hearing it pop. _________________ GFK

I had to LOL when reading Super Skims description of removing a type 3 spring plate! I don't know why but I just kept laughing, I think it's because we've all had near death experiences we did'nt even know about. _________________ "One man can make a difference...Jesus did." |
