Or should this be titled "Which project will I start on next?"
She was smiling as the trailer dropped off the two busses but her teeth were held tightly together.
I sold my bug to make room for another project in the garage. Now I am a Transporter only kind of guy. "Funky Truck" single cab is happily driving around being very truck like. I will forever be fine tuning little tidbits on him. But. I miss the big metalworking so I got some more rust... or two.
I have two candidates for a build thread. 1963 panel and 1961 double cab. They both have significant rust issues but in different ways. They are both complete with only a few small parts to locate. Double has frame rot in spots but ok floors. Panel has good frame but NO floors, rockers, rain gutters, doors or anything else for that matter. The roof is toast too. The double cab will be a straight up restoration look with a few minor performance upgrades. It is a good restoration candidate.
The panel is still undecided what to do with it. If I wanted rust I got it. I love the look of the large blank side without doors or windows. Whatever I do the windows are coming out. The panel I am thinking in two directions. Stock or offroad. I have done a stock body restoration. It is very limiting and time consuming. A restoration thread on either will be years. An offroad rat look could be a fun departure and need not be all consuming. Large tires? Transaxle drop? Rotated front beam? Og paint and linseed oil? Or a beautifully restored L 380 turquoise single stage. Hmm...
What to do... What to do?
I will decide but I thought I would post something and share where I am at and would like to hear your thoughts.

I vote for the panel since you did a truck last but either way I'm subscribing to this thread! _________________ "A rolling bus gathers no rust." |

please do decide to do L380 porn. I take it that by this post that you werent quite sure you enjoyed your funky truck restoration and are hearby wanting to confirm your previous quality garage time spent. I can see by the completion of bus #3 that you will either come to hate restoration or love restoration. They say practice makes perfect. The only problem is your last restoration was dam near perfect!
Awesome, now the rest of us will be glued to this thread for the next oh 7 years? _________________ Waiting for santa to drop off funky green. I can wish can't I???? |

as a 60 single cab owner, i really appreciated the funky truck thread. as a 59 panel owner, i want to see the panel next. funny, i was thinking about the same direction for my panel but haven't worked on it much beyond swapping bulkheads and installing new tophats/ibeams. built up a trans last year, but haven't touched the body for 2yrs now; kinda got distracted with my bubble car build. anyways, do the offroad panel. for sure.

If you are going to use the panel for a camper on off road trips, you are going to want those windows for a little more air and breeze. Looking forward to you doing the work on that, since we have a 1960 walk thru panel camper conversion that needs lower sheet metal work also. Like to see more images of that funky pop top. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

i am a doka guy so that would be my vote. But, a narrow hatch panel, slightly custom, big tires, could work.
perhaps a mountain gear transmission for better off roading? locking diff? _________________ regards

I thought you had SST plans for the green one?
That needs doing, if only to resurrect the funky turret top. _________________ Andy

I vote for the double cab...I would enjoy watching the innovate solutions you would come up with while tackling the challenges of a rusty DC.....Plus, bullet double cabs are just beastly! |

I think you should start on the double cab, and when your wife starts giving you grief about that ugly panel sitting around, you can sell it to me |

Kurt,
My suggestion is to finish the gates on the SC, then do the DC first while thinking more about the panel.
I suggest you make it into a camper, stock height with big meats and a stroker engine. You have the woodworking skills and can probably put something together that looks period correct but combines the best of all the many campers offered in that platform. Lots of options there. You could put together a glorious ambered birch interior with lots of subtle touches that a production camper would never have. Pick a single stage color you like--can't go wrong with dove blue but white is nice too.
I think if you're going to use it, I'd want windows though. |

I'd like to see what you do with the panel as well. Kurt unchained by the confines of stock. Panels look great and get no respect. |

Hi Kurt.
I thought you had previous said your 21 window bus would be next in line?
I am also kind of partial to the double cab as I own a 61 double cab that I am trying to restore in the near future. _________________ September 1964 Standard Sunroof walk through SWR/BG original paint. |

Add a light grey kombi into the mix, and you will have all the commercial models and a damn fine color palette. _________________ .

All three of the commercial fleet! Awesome collection. Don't know which I'd start first, but look forward to watching just like last time with "Funky Truck". _________________ I'm at the age were "fuck off", "fuck you", and "fuck it" answer most questions. |

Please do the panelvan! Most people restore deluxe, campers or kombis, but at least not much panel vans. I will start with mine 59 model this summer so i can learn from you.
Your single cab project was awesome and i miss your videos. |
