Looking great Steve, very nice work. But I have to say it looks to me like your wheel cylinder was what locked up your wheel to me. My thoughts are that the right piston ( right
hand in the photo) seized and the bake fluid pushed the left piston clean out of the housing, breaking the housing and assuring that it wasn't going to go back in ( ? ). I have a set of braided stainless steel hoses waiting to go on my bug as soon as I can work on it ( my garage is going to be built { finally } this coming summer so my bug is put away for the winter ) The braided hoeses not only take abrasion of course but also give a firmer pedal. Easily worth the extra dollars for better safety imo. Do you think this may have happened
Darren.
Can't hardly wait to have a garage... |
Garages rock! You might be right. My hypothesis is that the boiling brake fluid in the cylinder exploded that out when the pads disintegrated enough to give it the room to move, providing the audible "pop". I will not be repeating the experiment to test the hypothesis!!! _________________ 1966 Sportsmobile Camper https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=...mp;start=0

Cheers my friend !
Yep, can't wait to have my garage, and if it turns out 1/2 as nice as yours I'll be a very happy Bugger ;^)

I tried it both ways rather than look it up. Maybe it's my car. |
You are absolutely right Mr. V. According to the instructional video at JBugs as well as Rob and Dave's aircooled pages, the slightly longer one goes in the bottom tube. Like this, they do not come out even under the rear of the car. I don't know why, but maybe because the heads are off-set on the engine?

Fitted a fresh grommet in the body and braided 5mm hose to the tank and dropped the fuel tank assembly into place. The gas door is shaved so the fill assembly is repurposed for under the bonnet filling while retaining the stock vapor control fittings.
Front strut bar mounted for slot-car cornering performance.
It's 50 degrees today and almost all the snow is melted. I'm starting to feel the pressure of the incoming season. My crew is circulating videos of the first start of the year, including vehicles I adopted out at the end of last summer. I don't even have an engine built for this recent incarnation of My Precious. Vaccinations are circulating. Cruises are all but certain. I'll be on a freaking bicycle.

Keeping the dash smooth and simple, the light switch and idiot lights are relocated to the ashtray area with the emergency flasher switch. The brake light is OEM. The led oil light has a little illuminated oil can, in red, and the led generator light has a little illuminated battery, also in red. I found them on Amazon. The speedo will have the brights and turn indicators.
The car is wired for an alternator. I forget whether it's an alternator or a generator that needs a 12v light bulb to orient it's charge but if needed I can wire one in line in the engine bay.
This was a nerve wracking ordeal drilling into the paintwork!!!

Hello Sir,
That Baby's looking GOOD! I can't wait to see it on the road.
I remember you saying that you were going to install a BlueTooth Amp/Head to keep the Dash clean. Did you have one in mind or on hand yet.
I was thinking I would copy your idea and researched a little on CrutchField's. They seem to be made for Motorcycles/Boats and I am trying to find something with a little UMPH! |

Dude thank you.
I am installing a Kenwood Kac-M1824BT amp.
I think it's a class D amp, which brings down the size considerably. This is not an audiophile environment by any means so that should be just fine.
It does not have a dedicated rca out for a sub, which disappoints me, but the self-powered sub I might add can take a signal from the speaker wires. There is a single pair of a/b RCA out. I will be using the output signal from the set of speaker wires for front and rear, left and right.
It's a 4 channel amp with 45 watts RMS per channel (180 watt rms/400 watts peak). I will be using kicker 6.5 speakers in kick panels up front and 4x8 in the back probably in the panel below the rear seat. It should have sufficient power to drive these smaller speakers. With this amp under one front seat, and an 8 inch self-powered sub under the other front seat, this should provide a passable set-up for a fairly invisible situation.
I'm not sure whether you need the control pad at all but I put it in the gauge panel to have handy volume and song skipping ability without looking down at my phone, which will be providing the Pandora or Prime feeds for the tunage.
The self-powered sub is likely to be a Rockville RW8CA 8" 600 Watt Low Profile Under-Seat Active Powered Car Subwoofer, which I have to buy again because the one I got for this project got harvested and I am really enjoying it in my daily driver.
I'll look forward to the results of your hunt in your thread and will post more as I enter the stage of installation here. _________________ 1966 Sportsmobile Camper https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=...mp;start=0

Thanks for taking the time to share. It sounds as though you may have thought about it a little.
I agree, it should be quite sufficient. I don't think we're at the age where we need to wake the block every time a favorite song comes on. I'm concerned about my car, being a convertible and all. With sound leakage and very little resonance. Probably over thinking it but, you know that's just me!
Keep up the momentum. I'm living off of this build. |
