Great pics on the light bucket. I have to make this exact repair on my '74 Super's driver side bucket. Now I know what to do!

One of the front fenders is from another car and had been undercoated with rubber. Removing the undercoating and sandblasting questionable areas revealed a compromised seam under the headlight bucket. I thought about seam sealer but decided to fill and bury it in Duraglass, which is very strong and does not take in moisture.

One dent and crack at a time Buggee! Now if we could get Jeremy_G to follow your lead and return to his build we'd have two of the best shows on this forum running again!

The headliner kit that I ordered in the spring, has finally arrived!!! Applause the Super Duper is back underway.

Here is the work station with the headliner and padding kits inventoried and ready to go.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

The can of contact cement that had been in transit from California for six months was popped open and hard as a rock, so I stopped at the hardware store and bought a gallon for 40 bucks.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

The can of spray came through just fine and I used that to put up the roof padding according to the JBugs padding video. Sprayed each surface, let it sit for 5 minutes to tack and then pressed the together - instantantly bonded.

Here is the work station for the brush on liquid glue. I'd scoop a plastic cup out of the gallon and close it right back up. One disposable chip brush and one cup of glue would be good for a session and a fresh set would come out after the break.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

From watching the JBugs single piece headliner video, as well as the 5 part TMI early beetle headliner videos on YouTube, and studying the JBugs original install headliner picture of the parts, I surmised that the idea is to do this in large part like upholstering a seat cushion, but with glue along the edge instead of staples.

Here is the foam in place, leaving a a space along the full length for each edge of the vinyl to be hung with glue.

I was also able to hang a few pieces of vinyl, which took a really long time. I wore a painting respirator the whole time. Tiring, I finally spilled a cup full of glue all on the floor if the car and took that as a sign it was time to clean up for dinner! This feels like the hardest thing I've done on this car, but it still feels very good to finally be here at this stage of the build.

You are having fun!!!!!

Do you have a heat gun? If so, you can reactivate the glue with it and s t r e c t c h the material enough to remove the wrinkles. It works best while pressing the headliner in. I like to allow the headliner to sit out in the sun for a few hours, until you can smell hot vinyl. Then start applying it to the adhesive.

A squirt gun full of acetone is great for removing set up adhesive and headliner. Just a small squirt at the spot you need to unadhere. Works great. But test a small piece as Acetone, if strong enough, can melt vinyl! Don’t ask.

Thank you for the tips Jimbo. I had no idea what chemical to clean the glue with. I do have a heat gun but am using a hair dryer here so I don't overdo it and accidentally damage the material. It's a foreign skill set for me to be working on upholstery and the fun part of the learning curve lies ahead of me somewhere in the distance. I'm looking forward to its arrival though!

Looking great Buggee! I really like that idea of using the window welting to help line up and trim the b-pillar and rear window trim. Wish I had thought of that when I did my '73!!

Howzit Bugeee,

Much like I said about the paint color. I kinda like the Wrinkles. If it's all consistent...like all symmetrical the way it is... I'm digging it!!

My favorite animal is the Elephant, so I'm kinda bias.

Really glad to see you back on this project for a while. Carry on my Good Fellow Popcorn

I love the way the chrome aluminum window trim looks, and I hate putting it in!

Here's how I do it after a few bugs worth of frustrations, mine and friends.

I use NO lube between the rubber and glass, so it stays on the glass better during all the manipulating between now and the install into the car.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

The trim does not come perfectly shaped so I spend lots of gentle, caressing love slowly coaxing it into shapely submission starting at the sharpest corner and moving out from there. If I rush this part or get forcefull, the trim gets wavey, so it's all about the slow sliding motions, repeatedly comparing to the crack in the rubber where it will live. When I lose patience and kink a piece I use a metal punch of appropriate diameter to gently return the straight edge. Here is a comparison of before and after, just resting on the rubber.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Here is the undoing of a mild wave.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

The front window had an overlap that I trimmed with a cut-off wheel and de-burred with a chainsaw file and sandpaper.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

I use sandpaper (150 grit) to debur the ends of the trim and the little collars.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

I use Windex now (rather than silicone or dish soap which get out of control) and limit it ONLY to the trim crack, NOT where the rubber meets the glass - have a paper towel hand to keep it out of the rubber-to-glass joint.

Starting at the sharpest corner and working out from there in both directions, I install the trim pressing the rubber and the trim with my thumbs and using little tools as needed along the way.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Keep checking all the corners to see when the rubber starts pulling off the glass so it can be addressed right away and does not become a do over situation.

When the first side is in, I slide the collars completely over the trim, and will slide them back over the second trim piece when it is fully installed.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Here we are!

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

I install the weedwhacker plastic string in the window crack - overlapping at the top most of the way across, and lube the rubber and window opening fully with windex

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

With a helper on the outside pressing on the glass, I start at the top and pull the string DIRECTLY TO THE CENTER of the window. I yelled that part because it gets goofed up when I pull sideways, or towards my chest, or wherever. It HAS TO be pulled directly to the center of the glass to work, and it will. Spray some more windex on there as needed to keep it wet. Use little tools as needed along the way.

After it seems to be in, I go round and round pressing the glass in with my hands, pushing the lip outward with my thumbs inside and out. Little tools if needed to pull a lip out or something. The most productive move is the heel of the hands pushing directly down on the chrome stip, smooshing the rubber seal into the chasm and the glass with it. After it's all smooshed in fully and no more movement is goin on, I'm done!

Excellent job! Thanks for documenting your process. I've never done the chrome strip install, so it was helpful to see the steps.

Looks great.

DUDE! That moulding is a pain in the ass to do!!!! You did a great job. It looks fantastic! I always prefer the chrome around the windows. Even in the late 80s when everyone was into the Cal look, I was a chrome around the windows guy!

Nice job!
