Looking mighty fine! You are a sanding machine! Want to join in my sanding party, in a few months?
Hey, I have to ask, because I love reading your thread and want nothing going bad. I am assuming that the fan is sucking the fumes into the fan and then pushed to the outside. If so, is that an explosion proof vent fan motor? |
I wish I lived close to the beach and I would help!
Correct that the blower blows out the window. The motor is not rated as far as I know. If you look closely though, the motor is mounted outside the squirrel cage and drives the wheel from the outside with a belt and pully. So, fumes and motor never communicate. The bearings for the wheel can be oiled like the old days. When this blower with an external motor showed up on Craigslist it really simplified things alot.
Before that I had picked up a more traditional squirrel cage blower with the motor inside the wheel and was going to have to pressurize the booth with that and allow release out the window, so that the fumes would not flow over the motor. That would have taken sturdy, sealed walls for the booth to keep the overspray out of the rest of the shop.
As it is now, by pulling air through the flimsy pop-up canopies, I can set up the whole operating room, or tear it all down, in a half an hour taking my sweet time. I think it's going to be a game changer.
Thank you for caring Jimbo! |
Good! I had a custom cabinet shop, back in the late 80s. I sprayed all my parts in a booth, I would rent, from a good guy, down the street. Down a few doors was another cabinet shop that sprayed their cabinets inside their shop. It was raining one day, and they were spraying. Half way through the day, we could hear sirens and big trucks. Opened up the big door and that unit had black smoke pouring out of it! An half hour later the fire was out. Fire Captain made his way down to my shop. Started talking to us about safety. Long to short, guy was using a couple box fans as a pull through vent for spraying lacquer products! Not a great day for those guys!
Have fun and I love reading your updates!

Well, that keeps me from wanting to send you a white vinyl m
to stick on the roof.
I always wanted a Rabbit in that color. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

It's an Ozark Trail 12 x 12 straight-leg pop-up sun canopy from Walmart. I put two of them next to each other in the pictures of the fenders and that would also cover an entire car. For now I'm using some 10x10 canopy sides we had in the shed from some old pop ups that would get smashed in the wind or whatever and I would just keep the fabric. The end game is to use plastic sheathing and make a clean curtain hanging around it all that will seal out the dust and bugs, and cut windows in that covered by HVAC filter material. Right now my apparatus is keeping the overspray off the other stuff in the barn, but I'm still dragging in debris in between the side panels that lands on the paint. That debris is minimal and gets cut and buffed out, but I want to dial it in a bit. _________________ 1966 Sportsmobile Camper https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=...mp;start=0

Man you are killing it Buggee. I may have to drive to Ohio just to see this beast, and your workshop.
