Some mundane progress towards laying paint on the underside.
Check out these Pans! I'm ready to clear them after just a wire wheel on the angle grinder. They are actually going to be black but man oh man... these are the original pans!!!
I've been getting in all the nooks and crannies with the Eastwood internal frame coating, and won't bore you with all that, but thought you'd get a kick out of these two:
First, I've deleted the vents, welding on a patch from the outside. To seal them internally I drilled an arthroscopy hole and got in there this way.
Also hit the frame horns where the transaxle sits - right through the bolt holes.
Ok. Now we all know that all work and no play makes jack a dull boy. So I had to take a break from the drudgery and present my girl with some bling, because she's worth it. Off with the metal muffler and on with the stainless steel:
As to the details, I'll quote myself from another thread:

And I am here to defend my new Empi, yes... Empi, stainless exhaust.
I love it.
It's beautiful. And it went right on a smooth as silk. I was able to put it on the heater boxes and get the threads started on the studs with my hands and without wrestling with it. This was very, very much easier than when I installed the German made stock muffler. Much easier.
The heat riser connections are live, meaning they are open to the header with no drilling required. They are not directional, however, so there will not be the flow through pressure like the stock ones. Still, they are ready to go. I've blocked them off because I have dual carbs.
I will have to use a different fitting for my full flow oil pump. The header is just barely touching the exit hose not far off the fitting. I will have to swap that fitting for an elbow, or 45 degree of I can find it, to steer the oil hose down and back right out of the pump. Not a complaint for the exhaust in my mind as a bone stock pump would have this experience complete right now.
So I'm thinking this way now. The Volksworld article that found peak horsepower down, but also peak torque up, is ten years old and also found that the quality of construction was horrible and they had a hard time even getting it on. Empi is a brand, and I imagine it's farming out all of the manufacturing. Whoever manufactured this stainless two tip exhaust made one that looks great and installs easier than the stock for me.
I like it.

Hey Buggeee....
I have spent the morning reading your thread.
I haven’t owned a air cooled in several years. I’m currently counting the days until I can pick one up again.
You and your car are very inspiring! |

Hey Jarrett thank you for the kind words! Good luck on your quest. Look forward to your starting a thread and posting some pictures when you get one home.
Edit: Dang that was a Slaaaammmed 65 you built before. Very cool. _________________ 1966 Sportsmobile Camper https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=...mp;start=0

You guys are awesome! I love the positive vibes in our hobby. This bug is officially now the biggest build project I've ever tried to pull off and I'm having a ball with it.
Here's something that I'm really pleased with - the Bakelite heater tubes are accomplished. This little detail has had me worried from way back when I dragged her home and saw the block-off plates in their place. All the research spoke of madness trying to get them installed over the tortion tubes. A pan separation is the only way I've read. This is the first bug I've owned that would not need a pan separation for anything!!! Then recently I read someone's post about grinding down the flange a bit to slip them over the tortion tubes. Alright!
I used a die grinder with an 80 grit disk and went little but little until I found the shape that works. Here are some side by side pics to compare the results.
And here is the brass-ring. Bakelite in place.
It's a silly little detail and I don't know why I'm so relieved now that I'm here but I really am LOL.
I have seen online at the usual vendors that you can get foam gaskets for these that cost 15 bucks a piece - which seems ridiculous to me. Mine won't take a full size gasket now anyway so I'm just going to cut some thin strips of stick-on weatherstripping I got it the hardware store (which I used successfully on the dog house bump-out for the oil cooler tin in the fan shroud).

As in "Pro" crastinator!
Victor I had been working my way along from one panel to another and on the driver's door and rear quarter I had some streched-out "oil canned" areas that looked like they had been beaten out with a carpenter's claw hammer from a prior wreck (this is rebuilt salvage here you know and this is some PO mess)
...and my cousin came over to teach me how to "shrink" metal using heat and this waffled body hammer:
Here he is demonstrating the proper professional bodyman's footwear.
...and then I began the duraglassing and mudding and sanding.
...and here I am dusting it with some primer or another to see where the low spots are as I continue to sand...
But winter had turned to spring had turned to summer so I had to take time off to do a bunch of camping with the wife and kiddos!!!
So after the summer camping season slowed down I built, in a frenzy, an early bug to cruise with my friends because "all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy." See my Turkis Pile build thread in my signature below, which I just posted for all posterity.
So after the Turkis Pile circus in my front yard my neighbors got the City involved on a repeated basis. And... although I successfullly stayed within the lines, if not spirit, of the local codes, my wife had had enough of the drama and we found me an outbuilding (with a house for her too ).
So I threw the old cruddy duddy suspension back under her so she could roll and here is me scraping up the work on the front apron wilst winching her up into a beat trailer to bring her to a safe place...
And here she is drying out in the stable among her relations...
Life is good Victor. If I am still standing after getting all my wife's stuff moved from the barn to the house, then the minion and I will set up the shop and get back to the buggin!!!! Untill then I am largely a spectator right now. _________________ 1966 Sportsmobile Camper https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=...mp;start=0

Hi there fellow airheads! I'm finding time (imagine that) to get back on this rat so I figured I'd litter my thread with some pictures to get some motivation momentum going.
After sanding the driver's rear quarter to baby-bottom perfection, I mounted the fender and found that the lines were not right. While rust free, this is previously rebuilt salvage and I have yet to find an unmolested panel anywhere. It must have been quite a wreck!
I had to grind down the body work along the fender line to metal and start over to create some workable body lines. I used Duraglass as the foundation for this illusion. After a bit of work I reached the point to finalize the lines, using painters tape to define the line like on the driver's front.
That created the bottom edge for the crease.
Then I filled a rear quarter triangle.
With that established the top triangle could be defined.
Once it was all roughed in I sprayed it with some primer to use as a later guide coat and mounted the fender. It worked.

Doesn’t look like what you started with. How many hours would you estimate that took? Actually when you weigh the experience gained along with the good feeling you get every time you’ll drive that car you’ll say it was worth it.😀 |
