Hi
I am currently restoring my July 1954 Oval. Both front and rear brakes have backing plates with 2 holes for the wheel cylinder. Any one knows when they changed from 4 to 2 bolt mounting of the cylinders?
An any one knows if possible to get new brake drums fitting the old type backing plate?
Mine are very close to the wear limit 231,5mm, so not much room for machining _________________ 1954 Beetle - running - Went to HO 17

Wolfsburg West lists front and rear drums for the early Bugs as being available. For whatever reason they are not listed with the Bug "Brakes and Wheels" but instead in the "Front Axle" and "Rear Axle" sections. _________________

Not sure of the date when they changed. I have a 7-5-54 beetle that I've had since 1977 and it has 2 bolt wheel cylinders. I used less expensive later front drums on mine by turning the brake lathe cutter around and machining off the outer rim. If you're planning on driving your car regularly you may want to consider upgrading to later (wider) front brakes as the stock brakes leave a lot to be desired in modern traffic. I had shoes relined with high friction linings and had them arced to the drums. Also switched to a 65-66 17mm master cylinder and they're still fairly lame. Probably as good as it's gonna get with a setup that appears stock.

My April trans has 4 bolt cylinders. My June car is all two bolt. Cant say my car is original, but the trans looks all original. |

Thanks for all the input. So basically I can conclude that it is fairly correct with 2 bolt mounted cylinders on a July car.
It will never become more than a pleasure driver with maximum 2-3.000 km a year mostly in off peak/Sunday traffic and it have to be original so will go with original drum setup, but might look into the 17mm master cylinder to reduce the efforts on the pedal as this will be barely visible from the outside. _________________ 1954 Beetle - running - Went to HO 17

I'd recommend the 17mm master cylinder. My '57 is stock and it has a lot heavier brake pedal than the '59-'64 Bugs I've driven for years. Not a shock, both have 19mm masters, but the wheel cylinders are different. The oval has 19mm front and 17mm rear. The 40 horse Bugs are 22mm front and 19mm rear. Area relates to diameter squared. The 17mm master should come real close to making the oval brakes feel like the 40 horse brakes. In heavy use the oval brakes will fade more because they are smaller. _________________

My Feb '54 car has 4 bolt wheel cylinders up front, and 2 bolt in the rear.
I'd say you are safe (and saving a ton of money) by having two bolt cylinders. _________________ Charmaine

Even if you have four bolt backing plates you can still use the two bolt cylinders with no modifications. If it is a car that you drive a lot then I would recommend using the two bolt cylinders since they are a lot cheaper and easier to find. _________________ Chris

Thanks for the inputs. I hope it will be driven often, however due to insurance rules it is only "driving for pleasure" - so not a daily driver even in summer season. So mainly events and a ride for ice a summer eve - we also have quite a few even meets during the season where all kinds/makes of vintage cars and bikes show up. But on the other hand I do not see these cars fit in during rush hours on a daily basis.
So as original as time and money allows. Everything doesn't need to be done at one time - needs to get on the road

Trust there is no doubt anymore - July 1954 are born with two bolt wheel cylinders front and back.
Thanks to everyone.

I am going to assume the same for June. Listed my 4-bolt backing plates and
am relieved to save a bit of money on cylinders |
