Another update! Slow, progress, but nevertheless, progress.
First of all, we got the day off yesterday due to a good sized nor'easter:
2.5+ feet of snow up here. School was cancelled for me, and my dad took the day off from work to avoid risking the drive. But, although this may sound like prime conditions for some justifiable 15 window time, the power was knocked out for about 12 hours so not much was accomplished.
The day beforehand, though, was a different story.
My dad was able to cut out the last piece of rust on the w/t section and tack in a new piece. No pictures from this morning yet, but he was able to complete the welding on the piece and he was also able to start grinding.
As for me, I was able to begin prepping the floor for welding. My dad marked where the I-beams met the floor:
And I was able to start marking divits and drilling:
Hopefully, more updates very soon! |

Nothing is too far gone. This is our next project, early '57 Kombi found in the woods this past summer on a 4 wheeler trail. |

small taillights, small hatch, brake light engine lid, kommercial interior, clean dash, 30 horse, choke, NO fuel gauge, perfection. just needs semaphores... _________________ regards

Agreed. Semaphores would be icing on the cake. But it is dove blue with a hand painted pin stripe! |

This won't help out in the middle of a panel, but it's worth it's weight in gold for punching welding holes at the edge.

Also, the same applies to this tool.

I’ve been using a pneumatic punch for most of the spot weld holes. A manual punch might be handy for some of the deeper throated holes. |

I do love semaphores, but we had a family meeting and decided that if they didn’t come stock, it’s not going to happen. |

Haha. Most of the old cars up here are going back to the earth. I can’t believe there was as much left of the 57. We are planning to make that one the “Shasta “ bus. That one is going to get an entire chassis install. |

We did get the cargo floor completely fit in. Just need to finish drilling/punching the holes for the spot welds. I think we are going to blast and paint the bottoms before we weld them in:
My bud Nate Jung loaned us his Rotisserie. We still need to fix the front valance before putting the bus on the spinner, but that will hopefully be very soon:
Thanks Nate!
Lastly, I am trying to fill in around the walk through backs and there’s this pressed detail that I am trying to recreate. As soon as I get this figured out I can finish with that part until after the dog legs go in:

well, originally they ALL had semaphores... In 1957 the euro models still had semaphores... in 1959 they still had semaphores... Just trying to help
if you hadto replace the b-pillars for some reason... with the additional semaphores it would be MORE safe than with just blinkers. I be the son has never owned a car with semaphores, you can't let the poor guy go on like that
Anyway enough high-jacking. love the work you are doing. _________________ regards

Congrats on your new find and I look forward to reading.
