Zundfolge1432, do you have a stock 1600 dp engine in your '74? Ninety-three is impressive!

She looks good for 14!

Thanks, Everett. She still goes on a several mile hike every day with my wife. She is eat up with arthritis but would never let us know she’s in pain. Her vet recently upped her dosage of meds to the max allowed, hopefully this allows her to carry herself on. She’s travelled this country back and forth and up and down and has seen a lot in her 14 years, loved by many.

Stock except 40 hp pulley, 36hp pulley nut, type 3 distributor Clamp, type 3 plug wires . All of these make about 5 to 7 more hp.

Seeing where your vac can is clocked on your 034 makes me feel better about mine. I figured my drive gear was off since most pics I thought I’ve seen places the vac can about 90 degrees to left of ours? Mines timed to 30 degrees at 3k.

Clean looking motor, Zundfolge. I need to lose my aluminum fresh air hoses, your stock paper ones look so much better. 93 mph!!

Zundfolge1432 & Brando90gl, your engines are nice! Here is mine and it is as it was when I got the Sun Bug. There are a few things I intend to change about the engine, but it runs great (well, I carried it to my mechanic's today because I have a mystery issue and may ask for help on the threads).

Brando90gl, thank you! Your offer is very generous and I definitely appreciate it! I will keep your offer in mind for sure.

The previous owner had a new engine installed (in case you noticed there's no engine code stamped on the case) and while he kept poor records, he said that the new engine had approximately 2,600 miles on it when I got it. So when I began driving it, there is a worrying jerking as I accelerate (never when decelerating). I changed the plugs and it ran perfectly for about 15 miles, then the jerking began again. It began gradually and eventually almost feels like the brakes are being pumped as I accelerate. For all the things I'm good at, mechanicing isn't one of them, so it's at my mechanic's, Guy Roberts in Newton, if you've heard of him. He's an excellent mechanic and has worked on all my VWs since I moved here 25 years ago.

Yes, Cusser. Is this the same setup you have? I've had a few with this carb and distributor in the old days.

Yes, that's what I use on my 1600cc DP engine from my 1971 Convertible, that now runs my 1970 sedan.

In 2016-2017 when I resurrected the 1970, I rebuilt the 30/31 carburetor (because that engine had sat unused for almost a decade, after running it a few years after all the oil dumped out and Mrs. Cusser ignored that and kept driving).

My distributor is a vintage German 009 (uses points) I purchased new back in the late 1970s/early 1980s to replace the stock 1971 distributor.

The engine runs good, I have no plans to change anything right now.

No, I didn't keep those old parts, didn't have room for them back then.

Cusser,
Those pin stripes are pretty sweet! Was that a factory or dealer installed package?

This 1970 VW was used at a dealer as a demonstrator for maybe half-a-year. I assume that the dealer installed the DPD air conditioner, the AM radio, and the Formula Vee stripes (only "Formula Vee" thing on it) and the thin black pinstripe tape. I bought this in Nov. 1972 from the first owner, 41K miles.

It had bumper over-riders (gt1953 has those now), and it never had the rear-bumper-mounted reflectors (I bought a pair used later on, but installed them on my 1971 Convertible instead).

Gotcha. Zooming in on the lower graphics, I now see Formula Vee.

Intake manifold clamps are on upside down, but you got the big clamp on properly. You are on a roll 😀

I put the intake manifold clamps on that way intentionally, for easier access.

Did you notice that I also left the black original boots on that manifold so I could slide those down if the orange ones didn't hold up?

Took a buddy out in my 2276 efi bug to do a little fuel map adjusting, got him to drive while I worked the lap top, first time ever driving a bug for him, I kept having to tell him to back out of it as the speedo hit 90, the guy is fearless Laughing

I drove my 1970 sedan, fun. I've only had it 48 years, but did give it a birthday party a few months ago
