""I could lift the hatch up and down an inch at the hinges. Does your hatch seem firmly connected to the roof? If so, it is excellent. ""
To Clara, I spent a good while last night just around the sub hatch. It opens and closes smooth, and has zero vertical or lateral movement in the hinges. I also found a little prop rod laying in one of the cabinets that holds it slightly open. |

No heater log on this one, either. There are some screw holes in the areas the tent pole brackets would have been, though. |

My floor looks about the same as yours (so satisfying aint it?) - I put down a layer of spray waxoli ove the cab floor. It cleared a little matt after drying. seemed really good but honestly held a kind of milky texture if rain got between the cab matt and the wax.
Maybe some one more experienced could chime in here on their thoughts on that?
Feels good to me though. To me once you have primed and replained you might have well as replaced the floor. Protect and enjoy the the OG as long as it can possibly last. _________________ I want a real garage.

You can clearly see the holes for the westy tent.. up from at the end of the awning rail. Also it has the front inside roof channel system for non headliner buses. Panel, Westy, Kombi used it for the grey commercial panels. _________________ 1956 L31

Yes, for those asking about tent mounts, if you zoom in on the front of the awning rail in this pic the holes are still there.

X2. I wouldn't worry about it there. |
x3 ask Lind about the bare metal on his sunroof standard... it only rusted when he brought the bus to W WA. |
I still have not painted that spot. It is only surface rust, so I have another several decades to go before it becomes a problem in my climate. _________________ .

Is this inside rear wall painted white or just a color issue with the flash?

Am I correct in thinking that Riviera was the only one who used the long rail tent mounting method? I believe their tents were made (and designed?) here in Portland by Beckel Canvas. It also has the singe pane Hehr windows used on 1965 Rivieras. I wonder if this bus made a visit to Portland at some point in its early life? |

This bus is getting some mechanicals here at the shop.
engine out... had the old 4th bolt installed and was frozen from corrosion (yay rats)... the good old starter bolt had a almost missing head and was near impossible to get out hahaha

Killer Westy! Congratulations! I have a 65' Subhatch I've been slowly working on.

I agree with what Lind and Clara posted.
Lind wrote: |
Many tourist delivery buses had no port code. Same with US serviceman ordered buses. This bus has a USA spec package code, so it is likely one of those two.
A 523642 paint code would guarantee it was ordered as a westy. Lack of that paint code does not disprove that it was ordered as a westy.
I would bet this is an original westy, either ordered as such or a private conversion. |
Clara wrote: |
I think there are layers of conversion in this buses history.
1) Sold as kombi in Europe. M-code 374, so the original owner ordered it planning to bring it back to US after their awesome vacation?
2) Early owner, probably the original owner took it to be converted to subhatch westy by Westfalia (not sure how complete a kit was purchased)
3) A PO found a parts SO-23 and installed that kit
4) A PO installed camper windows and tent rail ( in US)
I am just guessing from what I can see from the pics. A closer inspection would find more clues.
In any case, it is an amazingly dry bus. Have fun camping this spring!

Got new tires and painted the black wheels back white today before work. My friend that has a split bus repair shop pulled the engine and pressure washed everything. Looks like the tank and sending unit can be reused.

Spent the day working on the bus. The battle against rat droppings/nests continues but I think I'm gaining the upper hand lol. The bus is back on its own wheels now.
First, the bad. The pedal pan had around 40-50 lbs of rat poop in it. After dropping it I had to lay on my back with the longest screwdriver I had, gloves welding shield and face mask on, and try to scrape more rat poop out that was still jammed up under the floorboard. Nasty!
Now the good, while under the bus I was just blown away how rust free it is. Here's some token dry undercarriage porn....admit it, you know you like it!! Lol
And some post washing/polishing pics

Damn that under carriage looks fantastic.
I think I would leave the pedal pan off for a while and drive the bus down some bumpy roads to knock/blow the rest of the rat poop out of the front. |

I got some work done today tidying up the engine bay and installing new firewall and apron seals. And more polishing.
