Get the grommets for the cables where they pass thru the fire wall. Sharp metal edge will work thru insulation.

Adjust the RH rear brake line support so it will not cut that line...

Stuck at work tonight, but my friend worked on dressing the motor back up for reinstallation and happened to drain the transmission. Surprisingly, what appeared to be auto transmission fluid came out. Could gear oil have broken down and resemble automatic tranny fluid in 17 years of inactivity?

That looks thick. AFT would flow out and soak into concrete real quick. Looks like clean hypoid with only a few hundred miles on it. I'd still drain and replace it.

Another thought.. One of the few makers of straight GL-4 year oil is Redline. That looks like their MTL gear oil... good stuff but expensive. When replacing the gear oil, DON"T use anything other than GL-4. Anything else will not allow the syncros to do their thing properly and you will be having hard shifting and scratchy shifting.
Others amy have thoughts on subject, but this has been my experience...

Oh sure, bring the GL-4/GL-5 hoard in here. I've only ever used GL-5 and never had an issue. This is the same gear oil my rebuilder (Rancho) recommends. Shocked

Definitely not, its a San Diego, then somewhere in southern New Mexico, then Tucson bus since 1995.

The fuel tank appeared to be in such good shape that it was simply cleaned and reused, with a new petcock, fuel hose , and sender seal.

The fuel tank is in and the engine runs nice after its 17 year hibernation, but the tank is now having second thoughts.... Embarassed

It does help to keep that area from collecting all sorts of debris from being sucked up into there, and collecting under the tank where in turn it can cause rust.

Just got to see a low rust Arizona Deluxe that rats set up house in front of the tank causing a hole to rust out in the front of the tank.

What will happen to the plates? That "R" sequence is correct for '65. Someone in California could transfer those although I have no idea how that is done. I can't get over how decent that bus is. Even the headlight interiors remain relatively unrusted. Will you go white on the bumpers eventually?

I'm going to hit the bumpers with oven cleaner and steel wool and see if the OG white is still under there.

Try Citri-Strip first. In some cases oven cleaner will go straight through OG paint.

Spent the day working on the bus. The battle against rat droppings/nests continues but I think I'm gaining the upper hand lol. The bus is back on its own wheels now.

First, the bad. The pedal pan had around 40-50 lbs of rat poop in it. After dropping it I had to lay on my back with the longest screwdriver I had, gloves welding shield and face mask on, and try to scrape more rat poop out that was still jammed up under the floorboard. Nasty!

Now the good, while under the bus I was just blown away how rust free it is. Here's some token dry undercarriage porn....admit it, you know you like it!! Lol
