Me.

I am that person.

Heres the story.. I went to an air-cooled show once and saw a few early bays and that kinda stared my love affair with them.
I had a tip off that someone down the road from me had a 'project' early he wanted rid of for some space, so i got on to him straight away and got some pics...

naturally i was undeceive at first and after about 5 seconds i agreed to buy it, not knowing a thing about aircooled vw's and the only repair work ive ever done being a rear arch on my mk1 caddy Rolling Eyes .. many moons passed with me trying to raise the cash but did eventually sort it and got it delivered outside my house while i was at work one day.

heres some i took that evening..

Mixed emotions Shocked but i was over the moon anyway! Anyway turns out its a 1968 bus, well aug 67 i guess, im the 3rd owner, the last one bought it for spares in 1991 for spares (£99 he paid)

at that point i didnt realise how much of a ball ache parts are to find but hey ho we live and learn!
A week or so later i dragged it to work where it now lives for the foreseeable future, work has been painfully slow, working full time and raising a family isnt the best time to get a major project but me and a few mates have cracked on and heres some progress so far...

Its almost had an entire new front end, floor, A pillars, arches

sorry about all the pics and crap order, but you get the idea..
That was done in the last couple of months, more recently ive fitted tubs and just bought a few bits for her, nothing exiting but finding the 68' speedo was entertaining Shocked

last thing i did the other night was start to mock up the seat mounts to fit over the tubs. The ride height wasnt as bad as i expected, still have a few inches above my head even with standard seat bases!

anyway thats where i am at the mo (Y)

You are either stupid or genius. Cool You are going above and beyond what any sensible person would do, and that is meant as a compliment.

Either way, it is inspiring, and makes me feel much better about my rusty project, JellyBean:

Stupid for buying a right hand drive bus in the UK, not so much, stupid for buying THAT bus, very much so. Laughing
Looks like you're making decent progress on it, good job! Are you buying the patch panels, making them, or did they come with it?

I was not expecting to see a MPH speedo on a right hand drive vehicle though.

I don't think the balls required to undertake that work will fit into the cab of a VW bus.

Wow!, that's one hell of an undertaking, impressive for sure, stupid?, only you'll be able to answer that question when it's all done.

At least one that fubar is a good candidate for the tubs, etc.. , anything you do improves it. Why not go all the way and Subaru the sh*t out of it as well?

LS1 at the minimum. V12 McLaren power would be more like it.

This has got to be one of the worst bays ever to have been "restored". The work looks good so far, I am impressed that you didn't give up! Well done, keep us posted.
