PostPosted: Tue May 27, 2008 9:54 pm    Post subject: Door Component Installation Order Reply with quote

So when I get my bus back tomorrow, I need to get all the door components installed so I can secure the bus.

Installed now: Lock mechanism, inside door handle, new German door seal, door pop-out thing (whatever it is called) between the hinges.

To Install:
Inside scraper
Outside scraper
Window
Ving Window
Window Regulator
Outside door handle (with new seals)

For anyone who has taken a bare door and built it up, what would be your order of operations here?
The door handle obviously can be the last thing...

I took everything out myself, but I am looking for the quickest way to get it all back in.
Thanks

Here's the sequence I followed:
1. Outer Window Scraper(w/ aluminum trim) - OEVee
http://www.oeveedub.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PR...ndow-seals
****I also revited these for better fit..
2. Install Felt Channel Clips
http://www2.cip1.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=VWC%2D111%2D837%2D361
****The originals fit best, these are not as wide...but work
3. Vent Window Seal
http://www.oeveedub.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PR...ndow-seals
4. Vent Window Rivet & washer
http://www2.cip1.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=C16%2D111%2D648
5. Vent Window Felt Channel Guide (use 3M trim adheisive)
http://www2.cip1.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=VWC%2D311%2D837%2D433%2DA2
6. Install Inner Door Scraper
http://www2.cip1.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=C24%2D211%2D837%2D475%2DGR
7. Place Window in Door (align w/ felt guides), do not bolt yet, just let it sit low in the door until #8 is in place.
8. Install Window actuator-crank regulator
http://www2.cip1.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=VWC%2D211%2D837%2D502
9. Install Vent window Frame Exclamation CAREFULLEY-THIS IS A SOB to get in Exclamation, some dish soap lube may help, you have to wedge the front tips of the widow scrapers between the vent wing frame (tricky), go slow.
http://www2.cip1.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=C24%2D231%2D837%2D602%2D5
10. Install Long Felt Channel Guide
http://www2.cip1.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=VWC%2D111%2D837%2D439%2DD2
11. Bolt the door glass to the window actuator.
12. Now get all the rest, door handle seals, etc.
13. For sealing my doors, I used that sticky carpet protection plastic (3' wide roll) http://www.plasticover.com/protector/carpet-protector.html available at Home Depot for cheap. Just apply overlapping layers from top down. This created a really tight speaker housing...
14. Install door cards, armrest, pull handle, clips, etc.

Good Luck

Is this the piece that stops the door from flying open? It also holds the door open. Anyone know what these are called? Or where to get them if possible? Thanks

Wouldnt you install the regulator before the vent window itself?

I seem to remember having to partially remove the vent window to pull the regulator out.

Here is what I did:

1. Outer Window Scraper(w/ aluminum trim) - From Bus Depot - good fit, not too bad to install.
2. Install Felt Channel Clips - I had a hard time with these since my door was from an earlier year; but I made it work.
3. Install Inner Door Scraper - What a huge pain in the backside that was. My finger tips are still numb. It probably took 40 minutes to get that sucker installed.
4. Place Window in Door - Slid down through the top of the door; rested in the bottom.
5. Install Window actuator-crank regulator - Just had to hold the window up out of the way. If I have to do it again, this will go in before the window itself.
6. Install Vent window Frame - Mine was complete (window/frame/felt channel) and went in with patience and coaxing. The dish soap was a good help, I recommend using it.
7. Bolt the door glass to the window actuator - straightforward enough.
8. Install Long Felt Channel Guide - again, quite straightforward.
9. Door handle with new seals
10. Then all the little stuff

Thanks for the tips

That's correct with the regulator lift mech., I did this twice on both doors, so that's the hitch, the lower arm (frame) of the vent window bridges over the crank regulator (track), therefore it goes in first. (original sequence above has been revised).

It's also a good idea to lube the actuator w/ a good synthentic bike grease (Phil wood, etc.) before installing. That inner scraper, was hard to install, I used needle nose pliers and a slim screwdriver to pop in those clips, the outerscraper did a nice job slicing up my fingers.... Mad

the order is crucial study this carefully like i didnt what i did was install everything and left the winder mechanism for last- ha ha! it wont go in..... go back uninstall the upper window felt, inner scraper, remove the vent window assembly, put in the winder mechanism, reinstall the vent window assembly and then hassle long and hard to get the window and felts back in the saddle- all unnecessary because of those who have gone before -- oh yea another thing, the inner scraper hole pattern is different for different years- if you dont have the correct one, IT Willl Not Fittt so measure carefully, when you do have the right one the installation is fairly straight-forward

I think you guys are talking about the "door check rod".

This job is a real bitch. Couple of things. Since you have the regulator removed try and lube it. I used lubriplate. Next, the inner scraper goes on after the outer. The new scrapers come with the wire gizmo that holds it in place. Best if you can reuse the original wire. I had to make a special tool to install the last clip on the inner scraper.
