Guys,
I'm trying to take my bus all the way back to stock engine wise. I just received a nice rebuilt 205Q distributor and now I'm planning to have Tim@volksbitz build be the correct 34PICT-3 for it. Problem is that there are several different 34's out there. The Old Volks Home has a nice list for distributors but I haven't been able to find a similar list for the carb. Post a pic of it too if you have one.

You will need the original engine code as well as any M codes associated with it. I assume you have the info from your M code plate.
So I gazed into the crystal ball and here is what I found. Scroll down to the 34 PICT-3 info:

Thanks guys. I'm away from the vehicle right now but I do have the VIN, just not the M-plate. Looks like there were two carbs installed on the dual port 1971. Either a 211 129 031F or a G. Looks like the F was on AD engines and the G was on AE engines. So now I need to see what the difference between those engines is.

Andy (Glutamodo) told me that base numbers VW 280-1, VW 327-1 or VW 327-2 were all 71 bus only carbs, Tim hooked me up with a 327-2 and it works great. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

So Mark,
Yours is correct in your 1971? Got any pics of it installed? _________________ Lead Mechanic: San Diego Air and Space Museum

Best one I have at this time, it's from the fuel pressure thread (much has changed since, but the carb remains):
As for correctness I trust Andy's information, and it plays well with the 205Q, can't recall the Pn# on the tag, Tim may have some of that info as well. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

I was pretty sure my first 1971 bus purchased around 1979 had the dash pot like yours does. Tim sold you the carbs with dash pot and positioner? _________________ Lead Mechanic: San Diego Air and Space Museum

I suspect there may be some correlation between engine code and carb #.
In my small world sample my 73 beetles (one standard and one super) were made approximately 2.5 months apart. Both engine codes are AK and engines are 60,000 numbers apart. Both use the 377-2 carb.
FYI. |

I didn't think the dashpots were installed on the 34-3 solex carbs until 1972-1973?
The 1971 VW bus owners manual shows the dual port engine with a Solex 34-3 without a dash pot.
Anyone know for sure? _________________ Contact me at [email protected]

The M Code info specific to the vehicle will tell all. |

I just looked at the Bentley service manual. It says all 1971 buses had the dash pot.
EDIT- I wonder why? They were also delivered with the altitude throttle positioner on 1971 buses as well.. Both the dash pot and throttle positioner are holding the throttle from slamming closed. Why do you need two systems for the same thing?
As Johnny Carson would say "I did not know that".. _________________ Contact me at [email protected]

Tim supplied that dashpot, I already had the TP on the old carb as well as another sketchy dashpot. 17 years ago when I was undoing the hodgepodge of PO supplied parts the Bentley showed a dashpot so I put one on, can't say if it belongs but I parted a couple of fairly OG 71's for that project and they had them too. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

My '71 originally had the dashpot and the altitude adjustment. I was young and stupid and tossed them along with the OG distributor..... _________________ If you haven't bled on them, you haven't worked on them.

There was one NOS one for sale in the classifieds. I grabbed it. I paid.......$50 bucks!
Being a purist isn't cheap! I also googled around and didn't see anything else. Gary, I'd check with Tim, I bet he has a bucket of good used ones. _________________ Contact me at [email protected]

My ears were burning.
Yes, I have lots of old but good dashpots and throttle positioners, even some new dashpots. I can include a used one or both with a restored carburetor no charge, or I can sell if you need one. _________________ http://volkzbitz.com
