I eyed that VT Syncro for weeks wanting it to convert my 2WD. Know all about east coast rust and that it would not be trivial. Glad it's living on in another van! Thanks for taking the time to share what you are doing. Also not trivial!

out with the old......
....And in with the also old....
I pulled out the 2wd front suspension, fuel tank, steering rack, spare tire, and cut out the three 2wd specific cross-members. I had stripped the Syncro steering rack cross-member and cleaned it and painted it the correct L90D pastel white beforehand. Very carefully measured and measured again and clamped it in place then welded it in.
A little more welding of the two plates to cover the holes left from removing the front cross-member and I'll be ready to bolt up the sub-frame and hopefully start hanging the Syncro front suspension tomorrow.

moving right along....
next step is to mount the Quattro rear diff that will become the new front diff. It fits very nicely through the hole in the subframe, no need to drop the sub to get the diff in or out.

I asked him about that the other day and my understanding is that it's on hold. Some wacky thing about customers coming first. |

Yes, The people that pay for work to be done get priority of my own projects. I'm really looking forward to getting back on that Bay Westy. Can't wait to drive it, that 5 speed and 1.8t should be a blast in that rig. It'll be strange to feel real heat in a '77 van.
My 1.8t Boxter is also waiting for more attention, just need the time.....

Thanks Ledogboy, I'm really happy with the way this is all coming together. Everything lining up and fitting just like it should, I'm glad to be done with the rust! Front diff, driveshaft, fuel tank, and Quattro transmission and then its road test time!

Yeah, funny how that works. The heat is strange and wonderful at the same time -- even after five years, I still marveled at being able to cook myself with the heat from the ABA/JH hybrid 2.0 .. and the heat also helped me track down every little drafty seal. |

Front diff is in place, mounts are all fabbed up.....
Fuel tank is in place....
The fuel tank was a challenge with all the hoses and wires that were up there. Once in place, I made up some straps from 2" wide stainless steel. |

1" spacer for the drive-shaft.......
custom rails for the drive-shaft, also being used to mount the rear end of the front diff, the center bearing in the drive-shaft, and the transmission mount..

Hey Andrew:
On your install, does the Audi drive shaft centre bearing end up acting similar to a double-cardan joint to eliminate/reduce driveshaft vibrations? _________________ '86 Syncro Westy SVX |

I assume that's the reason Audi uses it. The Audi drive-shaft has a CV joint on each end, a U-joint in the center, and a center bearing. |

First road test! Not even a hint of any vibration, very smooth. The video is a bit noisy with a box of loose parts and windows open, but everything sounds and feels just the way it should. |

Pretty damn cool.
I'm just about to come up on 2 years with your reversed engine/transmission set-up, zero issues, and this is a daily driver, not just being used for the occasional trip, I've put a lot of miles on my heavy rig (right at 5,000 #). _________________ One of these days I'm gonna settle down,

I'm curious how the Dorman will hold up, I know VW switched from the early Syncro rubber boots to the hard plastic ones, that are very good.
I didn't know Empi was doing silicone boots?? For our vans, they are Neoprene boots.
Do you have a part number?
Congrats again on the great job, this truely deserve the Vanagon Porn award _________________ Silicone Steering Boots and 930 Cv boots for sale in the classifieds.
