I'm having an erratic electrical problem. It started with blinkers flashing at a high rate. Thinking it was a bulb out I check them all and they are fine. Then every once in awhile after turning off the key and removing it the heater fan and wipers still operate. The a/c fan will stay on also if it's being used.
I'm also having occasional problems with the radio cutting on and off.
It appears that it might be associated with the ignition switch but before I start testing parts I thought I'd throw it out to anyone that may have had this problem.
Thanks

I normally do not like to just throw parts at a problem -- but considering that the ignition switch is a frequent failure point, common to many of the things you describe, costs less than 10 bucks, fairly easy to install and if it was unnecessary then you needed a spare anyway didn't you? -- I'd be prone to just try it. |

Electrical gremlins like this are the worst. Start by making sure you battery connections are soild, then make sure all your grounds as still attachhed, in good shape and clean/tight.
I like to go through plugs, pop them apart, blow them out while looking for water, corrosion or just plain worn out connections, then use some di-electric grease on the connections. _________________ 89 Westy. 2wd. Manual. |

All good stuff, especially when something doesn't work when it should.
However, in this case things are working when they shouldn't.
The ignition switch is the obvious suspect. As originally designed, the poor thing has to switch on and off quite large currents, which can cause arcing leading to poor contacts and so eventual heat damage. When it gets replaced (tip - buy two!) it'd be worth adding relays to the starter solenoid circuit and to the headlamps, horn, and any other large-current devices that don't have an existing relay. _________________ Jim Crowther
