Nice, but looks like a Type 4 with a 911 style shroud. _________________ Glenn

Does it still have the sodium valves?
I would think 200hp in a buggy will be scary fast. _________________ Glenn

I remember an article in hot vw or was it vw trends years ago about the Type 4 VW Heads vs the Porsche Heads and they had to move the spark plug hole location on the VW heads to make them rev to higher RPM's in some performance application. Apparently the Porsche head had no problems like that. _________________ 1960 Beetle And 1679cc DP W-100 & Dual Zeniths! |

I wanted to go with FATS full road race cam set up but Greg said he didn't recommend it due to drivability. So we went one cam down. Not sure the cam specs, will look at the spec sheet. FAT does all their own grinds. I believe Greg said it's a 9:1 compression ratio so relatively mild. It's going to he a stout, super reliable engine. I gave him free reigns, said I wanted all the goodies. This includes the 5th head stud mod FAT is known for. I got the full meal deal. _________________ Brent

I'm not a Porsche expert by any means but I do believe you are correct.
If I remember correctly in stock trim the Porsche heads produced 10 or so more hp.
I dumped a pile load of money into the heads. Cracks welded, they are known to crank. Deck heights changed, no shims! Ported, polished. Full meal deal. _________________ Brent

Valves were replaced, with what I don't know.
I honestly hope it freaks the heck out of me. |
200hp in a buggy is FUN with a capital FUN. That thing is going to be a monster Brent, you should have enough torque to lift the front wheels ALL the way up. Serious displacement. Hope I get to Alta. so we can hook up at a show some time.

Good luck with that. The only engine that I had actually built by someone was by FAT, and it never ran well. And it wasn't from a lack of knowledge of carb tuning or general know-how. If you bought yours as a turn-key where they actually started it and tuned it at the shop, that's one thing. As a "long block" where you add the carbs, tins, etc, they won't guarantee a thing. And I paid a big price to get that engine. |

My car isn't set up for wheelies, tank in the front, so low to the ground. But hey its going to be fun finding out what it's going to do.
Looking forward to meeting up with you some day. With the gearing i chose ill be able to cruise up to Edmonton very nicely. How many fuel stops... well that's another story LOL. _________________ Brent

Sorry to hear that. Yes I gave then the entire build. To be broke in and ran on the dyno and tuned. Should be a turn key set up when it arrives. _________________ Brent

Glasser,
I advise contracting with an agent on the US side of the border to do product testing on this engine to ensure your happiness with it, and offer my car and my services to that end....I offer to send you my 1776 while I provide a very thorough test of your new power plant. I guarantee that my tests will be complete by the Fall of...2018. |

Crossing my fingers it gets on the dyno today. Excitement is building! _________________ Brent

Glasser, don't you wish you'd ordered this engine when the US/CAN dollar was on par.
I restored a 356 replica back in 2010, when the dollars were on par and I'm now restoring my newly purchased dune buggy.
It's A LOT more expensive this time around.
When I had my 356 replica I lived close to the US border, so I could have stuff shipped to a parcel depot on the US side of the border.
Shipping within the US is fairly reasonable.
Now I live on Vancouver Island so everything has to be shipped US to CAN and boy, is it expensive.
One of the few downsides to living in the great white north. |
