When did the seat belt receiver switch over from the early style (white button you slide over to release seat belt) to the later style (press orange button)?

Not sure myself. However. Page 23 of the 1972 owners manual states that both type were available and has pictures of both with instructions.

Every 72 I've encountered had the orange square button style, 71 had the white lever.

Interesting BD. My bus is a Canadian destination bus. Born in November 71. All seats have the white button receivers. PO installed retractable front belts. Receiver is red button. But have a look at the owners manual. The manual is not original to bus.
