The shifter i have actually works but I think the detent spacing may have been hand created and may be just a little off between r-n-d (+/-) causing the tranny heavy wear because the shift lever on the tranny isn't exact. I could fix it if I knew the exact oem shifter detent spacing. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Chris.

The only real way to find out would be to measure the ratio of a stock shifter movement, then check it against yours. I don't have a spare, so I can't help you there. However, it would probably be best to start with a stock shifter and see if you couldn't build an indent system into it.

I wonder if I could determine if the shift lever is in the correct position by watching a pressure gauge connected to the "main pressure" checkpoint on the tranny?

You might check with this guy:

You might be able to pick up a shifter, then you could do a comparison.
