Hi everyone! New here. We just bought a 82 Vanagon.
It starts but doesn't idle, but we can't pinpoint where to find the issue. I guess the first thing is to figure out what the engine is.
Any ideas?
Thanks

It's a 2.0 air cooled. If they run but don't idle it is usually a vacuum leak. I can see vacuum leaks in the picture. That engine has points and condenser so you could have problems there to.

It's an air-cooled fuel injected VW 2.0 l engine. Standard equipment in an '82 vanagon. Read up on it in this section as well as in the Bay window forum as this same engine was used in the Bays during their final years (?1978-1980?)

Would you mind pointing out some potential leaks?

Potential vacuum leaks:
ANY of the multiple hose & mechanical connections to the air flow meter "S"
boot (top R in picture) &/or intake manifold/plenum (top center in picture).

Shortcut: spray carb/choke cleaner at any/all suspect hose connections;
if/when idle surges, you've found an active leak in that area. Fix it.

As said, the bay window forum will provide a wealth of knowledge on the engines. The air cooled engine uses Bosch L Jet injection, it's really simple.

Looks like the white plastic fitting headed into your S boot is not fully inserted. I second the use of some starter fluid or other to spot test the junctions and fittings and hose ends for vacuum leaks. Watch out though. That shit it flammable and you could loose your eyebrows or worse. Vacuum leaks are the benign of the aircooled motor.
There is a very informative manual for troubleshooting this setup. Look in the technical instructions manual section for AFC fuel injection manual.

Spend a minute identifying the various components of the system and the whole troubleshooting process will be a lot easier.

Also looks like the s-boot is not seated onto the throttle body. Clean the inside of the boot and the throttle body where it attaches. if these are oily, the boot can slip off as you tighten the clamp.

So I connected/tightened the following (first picture) and it seemed to start a little better. It could idled for maybe a second before dying. I am going to drain the fuel tank and give it some fresh fuel and see if that helps.
On one of the hoses (second picture), I couldn't find anywhere to connect. Any ideas?

No, I don't but if that valve is open, that is a HUGE vacuum leak!

Plug that open hose and see what changes.

I don't know much about air cooleds, but that hose usually tees into the plenum as shown in the picture in this thread...

See directly below where the hose ends that you circled? The brake booster hose connects to the plenum and that unhooked hose you have there. It looks like they ditched the little Y connector that connects these three hoses together.

See in this shot that was linked earlier the little rubber connector you are missing?

Change out all the hoses, elbow, and boots and get it over with, if you go with the replace one hose at a time route you will be fighting vacuum leaks for years. These things are 35 years old at this point in time and all the rubber on the rig is rotten and due for replacement.

Is there a place that sell all these or are they all standard size ones?

Good advice right there! ^^^

You would be wise to heed it.

Its fairly standard size the main thing to be sure about is the inner diameter of the hose. You'll want the hose to be rated for fuel vapor or even fuel line for the wider hoses so it doesn't deteriorate. There is a little rubber elbow connected to your auxiliary air valve that often cracks too so check that.

Its the 90° bend coming from the right, not the straight hose in the middle of the shot.

This is from a bay window buts it looks the same.
