...With my two newly acquired Rabbit pickups...

The left door of one of them had no outer handle but there was a handle in the driver's seat. No keys to the car.

The other one, we got a key that fits all 3 locks.

So, I'm thinking, gee, get the key code from the loose handle and make a key. If it's the original handle, TA DA! :-) So, ordered one up, $15, will pick it up tomorrow.

Then I'm rooting around in the second car and find two matched keys on the dash with a small black plastic tag that has a clear key code MOLDED into it. Hmmm, I sez to myself! On a lark, I tried them in the other car, first wire brushing the rust off of them. Ignition, no. Right hand door, no. Loose handle, YES?!

NOTE THAT THE CODE ON THE PLASTIC TAG DOES NOT MATCH THE CODE ON THE DOOR HANDLE THE TWO KEYS FIT?!

It first I was Woo Hoo! But then realized, no, that's the one I was already having made. More Like Boo Hoo! :-( So, I figured I'd then take the passenger door handle off and have a key made for THAT one! But no, the damned thing won't come off! I don't want to damage anything, but I got the door open and have the M5 screw removed, push forward, then out, and ... NOPE! Stuck! So, I looked at the loose left one to see from its design how you're supposed to take them out... I'm stumped!

Help Please!

TIA,
Richard

There are two screws to remove, the one in the door jam and one under the trim piece at the front mounting of the handle.

Here in Indiana...

I removed the original door handle on a really cold day when the doors had frozen shut!

!

Anyhow, I picked up a new one from Napa, of all places.

with my 10 per cent aaa discount.

I just took the old tumbler out and put the new one in.

He's right, there are 2 screws holding that jobby on.

I was kind of able to figure this out, with internet research and just a gut feel. I forget if that new handle came with instructions or not.

I kept the old one for a while at my desk to scare off people-don't mess with me, I can break German steel with my bare hands =)

vw in its wisdom in mid 90s... b4 passats at min.. the passenger door handle screws are reverse threads... i think mk3 also... but not positive... on a b3 passat.. gotta have key to change lock cylender else the wafers break the micro switch removing it.. ruining the door handle... this controls both power locks and roll up windows when locking door functions... fun when its the reason the windows cannot go down... LOL..
