I was wondering of there was a VW spec on the how the ends of the short tie rod are clocked. It has been a long time since I did this but I know I used to lock down the inner and rotate the tie rod all the way one direction and then rotate the outer tie rod all the way the same direction and then lock it down. The 2 tie rod ends are at different angles because of the sharp angle of the inner rod and angle of the holes in the spindle and steering arm being different.

Normally this work would be done at the top of travel because the car is in the air. Is there a specific direction I should rotate the tie rod? (should they both be rotated all the way forward to the ball limits, or all the way back?) Should the steering be strait ahead when this is done, or turned left or right?

This used to be the kind of thing where I knew what direction made sure neither tie rod end hit the limit of travel through the range of suspension movement and turning. I've long since forgotten since I bet I haven't replaced tie rod ends in 25 years. I mark the the tie rods and ends with a grease pencil line before adjusting toe so they have the same rotation compared to each other as before.

The centerline of the caps on the ends should be in line so that the tie rod has full rotation on its axis. Set up all suspension with wheels on the ground pointing straight ahead.

Here is a picture from the gallery that shows how the 2 ends are not clocked the same on the short tie rod on king and link pin cars.

I've rarely seen them in line on Bugs with an adjustable short tie rod either. The long tie rod usually has both caps lined up. Perhaps lined up is normal for ball joint cars on both sides (never owned a VW with a ball joint front end.)

I was wondering if VW had a spec for that slight rotation between the 2 ends. My front is not narrowed so I would use it. If not I can make an good guess with that picture and my old beam.
