Fired up the motor this evening - motor is a 2387 Type 1. After starting the motor, the oil pressure light did not go off so shut it off after around 5 seconds....walk to rear of car and find around three/four litres of oil on the floor.
External filter (Mahle) had come away at the top obviously from a spike in pressure.
I have removed the pressure relief valve (pulley end) and the spring and plunger. The spring seems quite long and I wonder whether this might be my issue?
There are three springs listed at my local parts supplier - one is 33mm, one 63mm and another at 82mm. The one I removed I did not measure but is probably the 82mm one. Should I try both of the other lengths and see what the results are or is it not that simple? |

What size pump, and what weight oil are you using? What filter model? _________________ modok wrote:

Results could be a ruptured oil cooler if there is a pressure spike. Ask me how I know?
High pressure can push the seal ring on the filter out under high pressure conditions. The former Mrs. 67rustavenger did this and within 4 miles I had a rebuild on my hands. She never noticed the glowing green light on the speedo. Consider yourself lucky that you caught it in the driveway.
Make sure that you have the correct length spring and the oil pressure plungers in the correct oil galley location. If you still have the stock springs and plungers use them. The so called "high pressure" kits suck and can/ will cause issues like I have described above.
Is this a fresh engine or one that is well broken in?
What is the Wt oil you are using? Anything over 30Wt. is too high, IMO.
What was the last maintenance item that you preformed before this happened? _________________ I have learned over the years.

is this a new build?? _________________ Never look down at anybody unless you are helping them up..

I had a problem like this years ago on a new engine. It turned out that the external oil filter housing mating surface where the gasket touches was not flat. |

Ok - a lot of questions to answer -
The motor is not new but has not done that many miles; It has been run in the same configuration with these same filters before;
Oil is 5w30 semi-synth;
Pump is a 26mm Shadek;
The external filter hoses are absolutely plumbed correctly;
Filter is a Mahle spin-on - cross referencing a Mann W940/1;
Now, 67rustavenger - this is the question....I need to know what length the stock spring is as I'm sure the one that is in is way too long. I have the smooth type plunger in there.
Should I buy the 33mm and 63mm springs and try them or am I barking up the wrong tree?? |

The spring and plunger on the pulley side has nothing to do with your oil pressure. All it does is divert oil when cold and higher pressure to bypass the oil cooler.
The spring at the flywheel side is a pressure bypass spring.
Put a mechanical gauge on your oil line to see what is really up.
I had hogh il pressure and put a stock springs back in.....it cured the problem.
CB Performance has stock springs available last I checked. _________________
