I was inspired by Peter_Plade 's oil bath/filter mod so I decided to do it for my build:

What did you change in the air cleaners? |
If you take a look at the bottom of the filter you can the flange that goes over the carb is of center, that of course to move the filter back towards the fan shroud on the stock motor otherwise it would hit the decklid.
But not having that problem I moved the carb flange so it is centered with the inside pipe, and almost works as a stack now. I can take some pics if that explains it better?
Can't tell if it's the filter or carbs, but I have less carb "noise" now than I used too.
Btw it wasn't the best day cutting up 2 original filters But the end result was good! |
So here is a 1959 oil bath air cleaner filter
Yes, the clip is installed wrong on one side. It will come off for powder coating.
If I use the air cleaner as is, it looks goofy because of the factory offset.
Below, I already measured, made a template and cut the filter flange on one of the oil baths.
I'll show the process I did to do this. _________________ 1964 Beetle

I used a postcard to make a template of the curve of the flange. Then I transferred it to the outside edge of where the flange will be moved.
With an angle grinder and wire brush attachment, I took it down to bare metal.
I traced the template with a Sharpie.
I cut it with a Dremel and cut off wheel. It's small enough to go carefully in a circle. Not perfect but I'll shape it with a body hammer. Also, I was off by 2 or 3 mm. I'll fix it.
Before: Air flow restricted.
After: Breaths a little easier.
Now I'm ready to weld r up. The one on the left is a '58. The one on the right (with a dimple) is a '59. Eight months apart.
Tack weld and body hammer to make sure both pieces are flush/even.
Finished welding the '59. I still need lots more practice.
Here's the '58 air cleaner welded up.
Grind the welds with an angle grinder. And sand even with sanding wheel thingy.
Cleaned up.
Centered. This pic was taken before I welded it.
Success! Looks cool now.
I don't want to chase pinholes, so I put a skim coat of JB Weld on it. This will ensure a seal. Tomorrow I will sand it and then it's off to the powder coater! JB Weld will withstand up to 500º F and the powder coating process.
Hope this was helpful to you. Let me know if I missed something. _________________ 1964 Beetle |

Good job!
I'm happy to see that my previous work inspired you to do this modification 😊 _________________ http://vw-bluehats.blogspot.com/ |

Thanks guys, it was a fun little project. Here's what they look like after I sanded the JB Weld:
