Thanks for the compliments, I really appreciate it. It's nice to document the car, share the work and hopefully it helps others out in the future. I know I've learned things by seeing others work on here.
So on to the cargo rocker. First I had to repair this damaged jack-point...
For whatever reason, we had never sourced a cargo rocker for this project. I ordered a W.W. one when I got the battery tray and C-pillar as they've been good lately. But I wasn't happy with the way the cargo doors were fitting up to it when latched. I had an NOS one that had an inch or so cut off each side, so I tried that and it seemed to work better. Rather than messing with the rod catches on the WW one, I fabbed some ends for the original one and used that. Here's the rocker I started with...
Here it is with the ends repaired and fit. I also smoothed out the drain dimples as I'm pretty sure an early '52 should be that way? At least I hope so.
Inner areas primed and then installed...

Nice. Good work!
I believe whether or not 52's had cargo dimples is still a grey area. 51 didn't. 53 did.
We just need a pic of the hornbecker sill. _________________ 1951 Samba 20-017894

Thanks LDR. I'm going to say I'm almost certain a '52 doesn't have the cargo rocker dimples... At least an early '52. It would be nice to narrow down that down some more.
Dogleg repair... There's an older repair that I'm afraid I may have had something to do with when I started on this car years back. Kind of weird fixing something I did almost 20 years ago. Anyway, it could have been cleaned up okay, but I felt it was better to make some new pieces.

Here is it, photo of it by Gene L :
We can see the drain recess on the far left and i'm pretty sure the 52s i've had, had them as well.
Also, I think it shouldn't have the inner reinforcement between outer and inner sills.
Great bodywork though, and these NOS panels ! Wow !!
Look forward to see the next step |

Yes, I reached out to Brendan who put me in touch with Gene and he got me a few pics including that one. Huge thanks to those guys for getting that figured out. Looks like one more thing to fix. _________________ David S |

So here's the original 1952 rocker detail. I wanted to make sure it was okay to post these publicly before doing so. Big thanks again to Gene for helping figure this out!! Hope this helps some others out there also.

Finishing the right side dogleg repair. I'm treating the inner panels as best I can and coating them with epoxy and/or weld thru primer.
Checking the door for fit again and just about done with the metal work on the right side below the rain gutter...

The amazing metal work aside, I admire that this thread doesn't have some long winded 10 word title about what the bus is. Just '1952 deluxe'. Classy. Keep up the great work! |

Thanks agin for the compliments!!
So time to turn the bus around and start on the left side...
There were a few issues to sort out before I could install hardware and check the front door for fitment.
Hardware installed and door gaps are good.

This is a weird area to crack, I can't remember seeing that area damaged on any other Bus. |
The exact same crack happened in the exact same spot on Rafferty's old 1954 that is over at KCW right now...

very nice work Dave!
with the kind of metalwork you do, you should pick up a bead roller and some quality tipping dies. Those curved flanges would be quick and easy with a set, much less work and cleaner than the welded seam method.
either way, this bus is getting the work it deserves! cant wait to see more. _________________ drive your split. |

Thanks, I do have those tools... I guess I need to mess with them some more. For one off smaller pieces I usually find it's less time consuming and the fit is better doing it this way. I can fit all the pieces, weld on the flanges and go. There's some additional time in making the patterns when using the tipping die, at least for me. Whatever imperfections there are from the welded flange are usually filled in the first coat of primer. _________________ David S |

Left side dogleg and B-pillar repair. Similar to the right. Note more of those screwdriver-punched holes...
