Okay, so onto the deck lid hinge carrier... It didn't look too bad on the outside, but severely rusted on the inside. I remember trying to get this deck lid off and not being able to get a single screw out. Many of the cages that hold the floating nut broke and the nuts just spun.

Very nice, did you blast the inside before fitting the outer?

No, it would be nice, but in some cases (like here) it's just too much to haul it down to the blaster every time I have a small area opened up. I cleaned it up as best I could with abrasives and repeated treatment of metal prep/cleaner. Then sealed it up with epoxy primer. I was about half way through that process when I took this pic. You can see the mixture of metal prep in the bottle...

The roof had some ugly rust above the drip rail. From the outside it appeared as only pinholes, but up inside it was worse. It was only confined to the rear three skylights and below the window openings. I made the pieces myself and since I only have a 4 foot brake I had to make some in two pieces. I repaired the lower drip rail channel, then installed the upper strengthener, repaired the outer roof skin, then patched in the inner liner pieces. I tacked a piece of flat steel just below the window openings to keep them straight. The deep skylight buses still retain that upper strengthener, where that was done away with on later window buses with a more substantial inner liner. I'm guessing all those pieces coming together had something to do with the rust in there. Still weird how bad it was for a bus with relatively little rust.

Anyway, I took a bunch of pictures, but many didn't come out well and I don't want to clog this up with too many. Plus, it just gets boring. Here's some highlights of the right side...

Great work David, my 52 is in similar condition with very little rust and again very strangely suffered some bad corrosion in one gutter, I think the early design just seemed to prove a bit of a water trap.

Anyway love the progress on this Very Happy

The cargo floor was still intact, but beat and riddled with pinholes. However, the perimeter was still good. Because this is where many of the early details are, I wanted to save what I could as it just didn't seem like it needed a whole new floor.

Someone I knew was getting rid of these sections of a '56 floor years ago and I set them aside thinking they could work for this bus.

I removed one of the chunks of floor and the ribs seemed to match up well so I went ahead with it. The 3/4 seat stampings are in different locations on early buses so it didn't matter they were cut out as they needed to be moved anyway.

The early seat stampings are shorter so I modified the donor ones.

It's not the prettiest thing yet, but I think it will work out well. I'm planning to have the bus dusted off again at the blaster so I'll come back to this...

Another thing I did 15 years ago that I'd do different now. Embarassed The nose was beat, so I converted a bullet nose and replaced it because... Well, I guess that's just what we did back then. Back in the '90s we never really repaired rusty noses here in the Desert Southwest when you could buy one at the junkyard for $125. Anyway, I had always saved the original nose and decided to put it back on...
