Thanks again guys!!

With the majority of the metal work done, I'll be moving on to lots of sanding and priming. I worked on straightening the cab wall and welding up some holes, then body worked and primed the dash and front floor.

I had one last issue with cargo door fitment as the rearmost vertical jamb was too tight at the top. I came to the conclusion the jamb wondered forward as it met the roof, so I made a cut and moved it back. Then blocked out and re-primed the right side...

^^ Yeah, they can be crude. Sometimes it's tough to decide what to leave and what should be fixed.

I still had some holes to weld up around the sunroof opening and some floating nut cages to repair at the rear. Then finished up body work on the roof and got it primed. I also got the rear seat heater duct installed and the cargo rocker dimples and holes sorted out...

Thanks again guys!!

It looks like the undercarriage on this bus is brown? I scraped the undercoating off the wheel well from the quarter panel we replaced and cleaned it up. I was expecting some version of grey but got brown. Maybe chestnut? I've noticed dark colors on some undersides before but haven't matched one yet. Anyone else have experience with a brown undercarriage? I'm thinking I'll match this and go with it. There's some spray out samples of recent greys I've used against it...

Not a Barndoor, but my '56 single cab is a dark bronze colour underneath...

My Aug 52 deluxe is factory grey underneath, there is brown overspray on the back parcelshelf and cargo floor, But the lower half is red overspray mainly, to be honest there is a lot of factory overspray here and there, I believe no two are the same, they were pretty crudely painted so anything goes, I guess a bit of brown factory overspray underneath is possible.

Yes, I've noticed that on like '56-'58 dove blue buses... They have that dark undercarriage.

So your '52 is grey underneath, huh. I am going to do the red overspray and I know how that varies, but I believe this bus was painted (sealed or whatever it is) in brown first. So it would be brown with red overspray. Kind of like the look of an early rear floor like you mention on your bus. Any place the sand blaster missed and I've cleaned up is brown... It's the only color I've found under the undercoat that was on this bus.

Thanks for the input!!

Dave, my Feb 55 Deluxe is grey apart from a crude dark brown coat, possibly Chestnut Brown, within the rear wheel wells.
It looks like the painter has just reached in the rear wheel arch and given it a quick dusting.

It actually probably doesnt include the battery tray areas (matching the theory the painter has just reached in the wheel arch)

Interesting your brown is up inside/behind the quarter panel though.
My arches had been radiused in the 70s, so I have no proof of this area.

Your work & pictures look precise...what a top base bus...Im enjoying the thread!

so it's 1952. were the buses going through the same paint booth as split beetles in Wolfsburg ?
During that period the beetle was still available (just) in factory Medium Brown. maybe they were using up paint. It could be well worth to match your paint color against L70 Medium Brown.
In typical German Volkswagen fashion, to never waste anything, the painter simply could have used up Chestnut Brown paint from their spray guns, that was left over from painting the top of the bus.

Thanks again for the input guys.

RS, weird that your bus has some brown just in the wheel wells. That's what has me worried I'm missing something on this bus. But there's only brown on these wheel wells, and as I mentioned, any place the sandblaster missed and I cleaned off the undercoating, it was still dark. I'd scrape off the undercoat, wipe the remaining off with thinner and expect to find grey, but whatever I found was still the color of the undercoat. My '54 deluxe is grey, even the backside of the wheel wells.

dj, I wish I had something medium brown to check it against... Medium brown is a little lighter than chestnut right? It looks similar to the chestnut on my '54 but I don't really have an area in great condition to compare it to that well. I like your leftover paint theory!

I have some brown being matched and am close to having this undercarriage ready.
