What did you use for the padding? |
It's like a 1/4" felt/jute. I found it in an upholstery shop that was closing years ago. It's pretty close to the stuff that was used early on before they changed to the black tar-like composite. |
HI David
Do you know when they changed to the black later one?
Thanks |

Sorry, I don't know when the change was. Here's what's in my '51...

So nice! Such attention to details take time and slowly making progress like you are is definitely the only way a fella can keep these projects moving forward. The owner is in good hands. Btw making the effort to post here and make notes and post pics is also a huge effort. Thank you for it, Dave!
I tired doing an update on a thread just this am and my pic landed in the gallery sideways and it was for the Barndoor brakes forum. I got frustrated and deleted the pic and went back to work. _________________ www.blastserv.com

I didn't notice did you get the speaker corner supports for the bus? Not that you can see them now. Just curious. |

I've got some more assembly done on the '52. Mostly focusing on the undercarriage and mechanical here.
The original lever shocks appear to be in good working order, so I just cleaned and painted them, made new seals and filled with oil...
19mm master cylinder...
I didn't take a lot of pics of the undercarriage, but here's an example. Just about done running brake lines, cables, etc...
The wheels still needed to painted, so I took care of that while they were off...
The bus is back on it's wheels and most hand and foot controls are done...
I'm about as far as I can go inside until the interior guy comes through. Hopefully more on that soon...
I just got the new early pedal from Type29. Looks great, Thanks Mark! Definitely better than the old one...

The attention to detail is impeccable! Very impressive.
I hope this bus makes a guest appearance in So Cal when it is done so I can see it in the flesh. |

Thanks! That's the plan. I'm sure we'll make it out to an OCTO at some point. _________________ David S |

Wheels look nice. You may want to scrape off the paint at the lug nut seats before installing them. Lug nuts can have the tendency to come loose when tightened against painted surfaces. _________________ Jack Staggs

What a project, this is fantastic. I wish I could be as diligent posting updates! The refurbishment and re-use of original parts is great to see. _________________ Aircooled since 1988 |

Thanks Guys! Yeah, it's time consuming posting updates and sometimes I have to be in the right mood, as I'd usually just rather be working. I'm making a push here to get closer to the end and will do my best to keep it updated.
I got the cab door frames assembled and installed. I forgot about the latches back during the painting process, so I had to shoot those...
I also got the pop outs assembled and installed.

I really try to discourage safaris these days. They're just so much work to really make fit well and operate correctly. But I agree, especially on a barndoor. I would rather not drill those holes through the window frame on a bus like this.
On a side note, would they even be correct for this bus? I'm still not aware of any bus '52 and earlier having them originally fitted. _________________ David S |

The interior is coming together. Thanks to Matt Miller for help with wrapping the door panels...
