Hey Guys,Bought this jack at Harbor Frieght for 80 bucks. It is great for removing VW engines.I just took the engine out of my Bug alone, and it worked great. No more balancing on my floor jack.It has a flat surface around 14X14,and is padded.Fits the sump perfectly.Goes around 18 inches high.

Find a way to lock the sump to the jack and it would work similar to the real factory one. The VW ones were a big screw jack with interchangable heads for Type 1's and later model Type 2's and 4's.

Can u get it out without taking the fan shroud off?

Outstanding!!!

I have one with a busted cylinder, was thinking of modifying it to lift the full height of an engine, about 75 cm.

80 bucks? Wow! Y'all don't know how good you got it! Wink

Yes it would work with the shroud on.I was not sure I was going to pull the motor when I removed the shroud.I removed the motor while the car was sitting on the floor.Pulled it back and lowered it,then jacked the car up off of it.Nice thing is,when you raise the engine on the jack,it is the perfect height to work on while sitting on a stool.I can also roll the engine around my garage. It is very stable.Basically just like sitting on the floor.I always struggled removing the engine alone.Best 80 bucks I have spent in quite a while.

I have the same one.

WORD OF WARNING!!,!!!!!
If you have a deep sump installed, do something to secure the motor! I didn't. The motor did a backflip off the Jack, landed on my left. Carb, broke the manifold and the throttle linkage. I was out $500 and four months of good weather .

It is a great Jack other than that!

I always pull them with the shroud on if I can help it-

I have a deep sump too. This plywood cutout helped keep the engine from sliding around without straps and stuff.

Its one of those government subsidized power cords. Its free....just feeds itself...kind of.... Wink

I got one of the mighty jack brand (I think) motorcycle jacks about 10 years ago as well. Works well. I have a pair of bars that I put on mine longitudinally to allow holding a complete type 4 motor and trans without tipping.

Remarkably well. Laughing I run a one 'plugin' extension cord into the short cord of the box on the stand. The stand also has a bracket that I attach one of those fluorescent lights with a magnifying glass in the middle. More light on the attached engine. It plugs into the box. Then sometimes I need to use a Dremel grinder or something on an engine getting built, or rebuilt. It can be plugged in also. Then when I have to move the stand around, I just unplug the extension cord and move the whole thing around without cords getting in the way. When no power is needed I plug it into itself. I know it looks 'weird' when it's not in use but it is convenient when used.

The picture is kinda fuzzy but you can see the light plugged in.

I wanted to take my decades-old 3-ton floor jack up north, so I recently bought for $75 on sale at HF the 3 ton Low Profile Steel Heavy Duty Floor Jack with Rapid Pump. This goes from 2 7/8 to 19 3/4 inches, so considerably more range than my old jack. Plus, I needed the 3-ton for our Yukon, and the 2-ton HF jack that goes at least 3 inches higher is about $130, and marginal for the Yukon.

I have one of those jacks for this purpose as well. The only problem I had with it was the cheap hardware in it bent at some point so that got replaced. I bought mine years ago so maybe they've gotten better since then.
