Mike Fischer's Ghia, driven by Dan Lawson just went 180.1 mph at the Mojave Mile event. Powered by a 2.7L naturally aspirated, injected Pauter engine running on alcohol. This is now the fastest ACVW of all time surpassing even Hans Dahlbach's monster Bug record of 175 set in Europe in the 90's

Are you talking of any event or just this one? Paradise Express did 191mph in 2001 and 200mph in 2002 in the 1/4 mile. _________________ Formerly known in the forums as "OVALTEEN"

In a "stock" bodied car, not a rail

I can see that, your terminology of "worlds fasted ACVW of all time" is what was confusing. What you meant is that it is the "Worlds fastest stock bodied ACVW" , got you. _________________ Formerly known in the forums as "OVALTEEN"

I Don't really consider the rail an ACVW there's absolutely nothing VW in the car, but that's my opinion. The Ghia is going for 200mph + at Bonneville this year on a course that is twice as long as Mojave. Hopefully I can make it down again this year to run something.

I can see your opinion.
Some might argue that since the Ghia has a Pauter engine, that isn't a VW engine, it isn't the fasted ACVW because it isn't doing this with VW power. Just like you say that Paradise Express isn't because isn't using a VW engine either, or body. I guess it is all about perspective. To be clear, I'm not
arguing it isn't the fastest ACVW because of the engine.
Either way, that Ghia is fast as hell and it is a full bodied aircooled VW getting it done, regardless of what's pushing it. A true accomplishment and something to be proud of. _________________ Formerly known in the forums as "OVALTEEN"

The question should be is it a real body or a plastic look alike. Those two strengtheners along the top make me wonder. I wonder if the weight is logged for the run. |

I doubt that those are "strengtheners" on the roof.
My guess would be that they work in conjunction with the larger "fins" on the rear fenders to guide the airflow more cleanly over the body. |

It's an all steel original body, not fiberglass. The roof rails are not stiffeners. They are there to guide the air straight back off the car and give the car straight line stability. Bob Stahl uses similar rails on his 156mph LSR Beetle and I have seen them on other cars at Bonneville. They seem to be more prevalent on cars that have curved roofs.

Out of curiosity and on a loosely related note, which Karmann Ghia fron end do you suppose is more "aerodynamic", the early original lowlight design or the later highlight model one?
The difference in drag coefficient between the two would likely be very small, but that small difference could possibly translate into a noticable difference in mph at top speed.
(... at least according to the completely uneducated suspicions that I have on the subject, anyway ) |

Surprisingly enough small changes in front ends design don't affect aerodynamics that much. Making small changes on how the car leaves the air are much more important.

^^^ That video of the record run ^^^ is pretty sweet! Thanks for posting the link, John.
(... although I must admit, though, that I'm a little disappointed that you didn't apply some of your usual Photoshop magic filters to the video prior to posting it. )
What would be really sweet is if someone could now post a video of that record run from the driver's point of view.
While I'm sure that there's plenty of science behind all of the little tweeks that go into the fine tuning of everything to milk out the last little bit of performance, it sure seems like more of an "art" than a "science" to me. |

The roof rails are to spoil the air if the car gets sideways reducing lift. This is how it was explained to me anyways. They are required at 175 or 200 at Bonneville. _________________ 1968 Ghia Land Speed Car
