Hi everyone.

I'm working on a 59 beetle. I'm removing the springplates , or at least I'm trying to anyways. Drivers side came off just fine. 2 pry bars and a little effort and it was off. The passenger side, however, not such luck. That damn thing is on there. I worked on it for 3 hours with no luck. For reference, these are the springplates that extend out. You can not see the end of the torsion bar with these. I'm beat. I've tried to heat up the spline area on the springplate, I've pushed, pulled, and and wacked it for hours with no results. I guess i don't know what to do at this point.

Anyone ever have a tough one that you fought for awhile? What did you do that finally made it happen for you?

Sorry to hear you are having trouble taking the plate off. Are you replacing the plates? Meaning, can you sort of "destroy" this one to get it off?

With a floor jack and chain lifting the spring plate just a little off of the stop I've had luck driving a railroad spike between the spring plate and the frame casting. A brass wedge would likely be a better idea, but railroad spikes where readily available where I was growing up.

Weld a good sized bolt on it and use a slide hammer. Worked for me...

Remove the torsion bar from the side you got off and put a pipe in the tube and knock the torsion bar out from the other side
