Nice to watch the masters being able to 'do their thing' thanks to a customer who has the dedication/drive/money/brains.
Thanks for everyone who takes the time to post up pics and info to make this thread happen.

Thanks a bunch man. I was just telling the wife last night how neat it is to have so much details covered by some many talented and knowledgeable folks in this thread. I'm excited about all the future references this thread will have for projects yet to come.
The owner and I where hopefull in the beginning that only the front and clip could be done and the car could get back on the road for him to enjoy. We both were shocked to find what we found underneath, but we had a plan and we stuck to it as long as we could. Fact of the matter is , if there was all the stuff we discovered in the front and rear then there is a good chance the entire car is in the same disrepair. It was a daunting realization and took some time to digest,except and make the change in course I have know doubt we have made the best choice. This Beetle is going to be so Kool ! Enjoy. _________________ ⚒ Believe In The Power Of Positive Thinking ⚒

Awesome that you'll be going "all the way" with this resto. Opportunities to restore an early split do not come often, and I think it is fantastic that you are resurrecting this car back to its former glory. Thanks for sharing with all of us!
Looking forward to seeing further updates! This thread has inspired me to do the same with my 1951 Standard!

The 47 is off the the Body Jig and on one of our breakdown rotisseries, The Body is now on its way to be blasted and primed. I'm looking forward to seeing the results, I feel over all the body is in great shape for its Vintage. Stay Tuned. |
The restoration of the body based on the original specifications and pressing is excellent! Looking forward for the forthcoming installation of the restoration progress! _________________ '67 KG Cabrio (Mickey) ;

Wow. I went back to the pictures of the car in its previous incarnation and it seems incredible that it's the same metal. Was there a ton of filler masking all those serious wrinkles and dents? It looks so smooth in the older pics.

there are A LOT of people/shops out there doing terrible metalwork, only to slather a bunch of mud on there and make it look good.
the old saying in the woodworking world applies to metalwork as well "Putty and paint make a carpenter (welder) what he aint!" _________________ drive your split. |

Absolutely.... "Cave n Pave" as they say....
I may regret this later but I can say the folks that did the magic mud on this machine were very talented and new their kraft well. |
Back in auto body class in high school we worked on repainting a late 70's Toyota Corolla that had been painted once before.
The roof looked a little funny but not bad. The headliner was lower than it should have been. When we investigated it seemed that it had either rolled or had something big land on the roof at some point. They had beaten the roof back out from the inside good enough for the headliner to look almost normal. The rest they "fixed" with Bondo. It was at least 3" thick in the center. We sanded a ton off to at least get the contour close to normal. It looked good when we were done but I didn't feel much pride in that job. _________________ Chris
