Mr Joey is killing it on the pan. We have mindset of not completely over restoring the pan but it has some pretty serious pitting that we felt just needed some love to be livable... Once we he was happy with it, next up was the sealer primer.

Interesting, as last year, after owning the spare 47 rolling chassis for 35 years, I eventually got around to restoring it (Engine done, gearbox almost). Before and after pictures seen below. As you asked yourselves, I was wondering whether to fill some of the pitting.
I haven't so far, but might do before the final coat of paint. Although not shown here, after years of deliberating what paint to use, I've used polyurethane which has a harder finish when dry, and hardened quicker than I thought, and has the finish I wanted.

Here is one that a member was generous enough to offer me... If I don't get any resistance here on this style, I believe this is what we are going to call period correct for our 47. Any objections or observations guys?
Thanks in advance. Jason

It would be a brave, or extremely knowledgable person, like somebody who worked at the factory in 47, to stick their neck out and say for sure this was the type fitted to a later 47. I've acquired a few different types over the 45 years I've owned my 47, but not one of these as far as I know (all stashed away somewhere), so who really knows? |
The picture in this link is from 1947 and the air cleaner look exactly like the one shown.

Martin^^^^ That is exactly my line of thinking. Every post I make I say that same thing to myself. I often have to remind myself when I have a low percentage of response that it is only because it is very difficult to narrow down specifics when it comes to cars of this era. Even though it can feel somewhat repetitive even to me, I still feel a privilege and obligation press on without becoming a nuisance. I know I say it often but I'm very grateful for the time that people have taken to help push us along the way. I consider it a privilege and an a obligation to gather as mush collective info as possible. I want this to be a positive experience. I always tell my clients my number one priority is that we enjoy the process.
With that said.... Believe it or not I kind of feel like I'm putting my neck out there every time I make a post here, whether I think I'm right or whether I'm asking if I'm wrong. I have to remind myself that's just the nature of the subject at hand and the climate of this forum. I'm hopeful that the end result ultimately is me being able to make what I consider an educated decision based on the collective knowledge and the popular vote. My hope is that this can be a good resource for future cars to come and that the efforts on all our parts can have a lasting impact on the world wide available knowledge of the 47 Beetle. 🏁 _________________ ⚒ Believe In The Power Of Positive Thinking ⚒

The air cleaner looks rite at home there ... Thanks man!👊
The breast tin appears to have a hole for the down draft tube...? I find this interesting...
Is that the correct crank pulley?
Strange it has a firewall mat?
Looks like a Early 47... So Kool |
This is the '47 I restored for a customer. While it was a mostly complete, intact car, it received a "restoration" in the late '60s. The interior is not original but I'd guess something they found at the time that was close.

The breast tin was kind of baffling... It did have the breather hole. You can see the entire engine was kind of over sprayed when the car was painted. All the engine tin had the original grey/green finish underneath the overspray though, and the breast tin matched. I can't swear it's original but seemed like it? We left the hole and I think George put a plug in there when he was done with the engine. There's all kinds of confusing things like this on these early cars.
The pulley was wrong along with the firewall mat.
Here's a pic showing one seat that had original upholstery underneath the redone seat covers, and the redone seat cover sitting next to it...

I don't know on the air cleaner? I couldn't find much info at the time either. I remember Jim supplied a couple with the car, but I know there's some industrial air cleaners out there that are close. In the end we just used the one that was on the car before the restoration. _________________ David S |

That looks identical to that which was on our '46. That was discovered in the same way, by removing later coverings.
The new version that I had woven was produced to match the small pieces of original that were hidden behind the card covering on the back of the rear seat.
Over the last seven years I have had woven and sold over 120 metres of this fabric but it is now out of stock.
Sorry I can't confirm that the headliner was the same but I assume NOT. My car had no headliner when we bought it and it now has a NOS early genuine liner but no proof that it is the same as was fitted originally. _________________ Rod,

The headliner does NOT match the seats, my car prior to restoration had the original headliner in the car. Dave took it out and I still have it, we figured we could get some original paint samples from underneath it. Let me know if you need some pics of it, but the headliner you saw in my car is what was copied from the original.
Hey Rod, too bad you don't have anymore fabric, its beautiful.

I can confirm that that the headling isn't the same as the seating fabric, as I still have the original roof lining in my May 47, plus that I took out of a 47, which is now my spare rolling chassis (30 chassis numbers earlier).
The weft & warpn these earlier cars isn't the square pattern we are used to seeing, but diamond shaped. I'll find the spare section and photograph it later. Along with a friend, we are looking to reproduce this, if at all possible, along with later style headlinings, as just about everything we see for sale is too light in colour, and frequently garish. |
