I'm not sure on the type of plating, but they should be a separate screw and washer, not the combined "SEMS" screw that they sell now. If you are going for 100% authenticity. _________________ Chris

found this photo showing the wording:- sommer / summer - gefrierpunkt / below freezing point
at least the remnants on your shroud give you the position, size and style of the lettering

Ok , I took a look back. I guess I kinda cheated 🤪 I got the washers from Wurth.

Those washers are incorrect. The correct ones are flat washers like Virtanen posted, not the spring washers you have. _________________ Chris

Wow, that original stenciling on the fan shroud is awesome! Are you sure you want to strip it and redo it? You could mask around the writing if you really need to repaint the shroud. It's only original once! |

Understood. But here's an interesting detail. Your lettering is clearly a stencil. The letters are sharply defined, and those with internal openings have small separations--as all stencils do. On the other hand, your own period photo and the one from finster both show hand lettering. The letters are uneven, both in height and spacing, and show no connections to their internal openings. Clearly, at some point the factory realized a stencil was quicker and cleaner than hand lettering--which speaks to the refinement of their production process as the factory got back on its feet after the war. These kind of subtleties make original artifacts uniquely useful as primary documents to the past. Once something is restored, that aspect is lost. A middle ground, of course, is to document, document, document--and you've done that with your photographs and by sharing it here. But I still think there's a case for preserving interesting aspects of originality even in a fully restored project. You could clean and enhance the surviving letters as best you can, mask the immediate area, and feather it into the new paint on the shroud. In the future, should your personal files and documentation become separated from the car, this original detail would remain clear for all to see. As a disclaimer, I admit that I work in a museum.

Just because I'm into history doesn't mean I'm not inept! Obviously, I overlooked the obvious.
