Well duh, it is just an "old VW", it's not like it was worth fixing right.
It's nice to see these old and rare VW's getting the proper high quality and correct repairs done to them. All of us who've bought decades old, used air cooled VW's have had to undo previous owners poor mechanical and bodywork repairs.
I remind myself as I fix these old VW's correctly that they were truly an entry level, low cost automobile. Most were handed down or sold as they aged and were then owned by broke kids or adults who only wanted to get from point A to point B. If it broke or was wrecked, they chose the least cost solution to get it back on the road.
Now, as the values and collectibility of them has so dramatically improved, many of our VW's (like this one) are getting the proper repairs done to them. Threads like this where someone is dropping BIG COIN to fix this VW, only reinforces that. _________________ Contact me at [email protected]

For what it's worth I could care less how messy your shop is. I was recently in a shop that you could barely walk through, stuff piled everywhere. The shop specializes in XK-E's and is known all over the country and they do excellent work. Only thing important is what goes out the door. |
For full disclosure, my comment was a joke from watching his last thread. His shop is immaculately clean and organized. It was very impressive to see that. |
Thank you very much for the compliments and all the support with our threads It's really nice to work in a clean environment. I think one advantage I had to create this habit was always working alone and only having to pick up after myself. When my son came on with me I just taught him clean up after everyday. Now it just happens naturally. My 13 year old son is going to intern for a part of the summer and we will be leading him in the same direction. We are also excited about some new tools we added to the shop for this year. Hoping if I can teach them now to clean and take care of these tools they may at last their Dad. In response to what Bill mentioned about them being "disposable" cars and not getting sufficient repairs: This would be especially true on these very early cars; In 46 and 47 many of the cars were brought back to the factory after being wrecked or literally just punished by soldiers and others who drove them. i'm sure many of you have seen the old photos of the bone yards from those years. I don't know the quality of repairs that were done at the time and then they were put back on the road. i'm not implying that all of the repairs on this particular car were done in that era but I'm simply saying that there was probably a large turnover of repair work being done in those very early years. keep in mind this is before Volkswagen was selling Beatles to the public so these cars were truly just "tools" and were essentially just disposable. in this cars case I think it may have been possibly some early poor repairs that were just not corrected later on but instead hidden. |

Yes. I too have seen the photos and heard the coffee table cometaries related to the 46 and 47. I'm finding it very fun to gather information about these cars. I appreciate your input. I have been studying a local 47 (going back soon with more questions to compare) and have set up a viewing of a 46 tomorrow evening (I will keep you guys posted on my findings and or discrepancies) We are really looking forward to bringing this piece of history back to least the standard (if not a bit higher ) of witch it was born with , Regardless of its post production demise and or neglect.
Thanks again for the feedback, I truly enjoy the speculation and discoveries that go along with cars of this Vintage. _________________ ⚒ Believe In The Power Of Positive Thinking ⚒

lit looks like that the double layer metal patches are missing at the blue one.
They shall sit there:
I am not sure when they started. But I have a early 1949 and it still has them. |
My mid Nov 47 does not appear to have these. There are two odd shaped raised dimples on the inside of the R side panel a few inches either side of the gas tank support. I felt one dimple on the L side. It was dark and hard to reach over to that side. I do have the lower recessed shown. The panel between the dash and gas tank has been welded/patched, so maybe the double layers were removed.
My Feb 49 has the double pieces...

We had this one hole or two thread fairly recently, and can be found here: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=669777
As for the hole which the wiring goes through, with the internal rubber grommet, I do have the original off my 47 somewhere, and from memory, it's shape was more like that of a circle, flattened top and bottom, with the left & right side being U shaped. The rubber grommet can of course be made to fit into any shape.
I don't think this shape was as a result of the front end being stoved in during an accident back in 1966. After this, the car was sold for £15 to an owner who tried to spend as little as possible on getting it back on the road.
Always fun with these early cars, as the metal is 0.8mm thick, and the repro panels are 1.0mm. Doesn't sound much, but makes quite a difference to the rigidity of the metal, and sometimes welding one to the other. |

Thank you for the response. I had read that one as well. It was the first time I had heard of the rear apron not having the deck lid bump stop holes. I'm seeing some with and some with out (Is it safe to say if they have them it's not the original apron?) I would love to see more examples. As for the tire well I was hoping for some photo confirmation of what it looks like. In a earlier post a shared a very poor shot of one I was able to take. Along with that question I did not know if the two drain holes directly under the bumper brackets were present on the 47.
So technically the Wolf apron has four holes. Two in the center and one on each end. Does that sound correct? Does the 47 have three then, one center located and one one ether side ? ( may seem sillly to ask , but I don't know )
The thinner metal is slightly more challenging but that is part of the adventure of working on this Kar.
My Son and I truly appreciate all
The help we are getting. Thank you _________________ ⚒ Believe In The Power Of Positive Thinking ⚒
