What I keep thinking is that I never cease to be amazed by your attention to detail -- and wonderful craftsmanship. This is currently by far my favorite thread on TheSamba. _________________ Gone but not forgotten: 1950 Hoffman split (restored in 1966) - another 1950 Hoffman split (restored in 1996) |

I couldn't agree more. I am amazed too, seeing what the results are of your work. I don't consider myself as stupid or clumsy, but this is far beyond my skills.
So greetings from the Netherlands and saying once more : amazing job and I'll look everyday to see if there's someting new in this topic. _________________ a beetle is like a cocker spaniel, always funny but sometimes not listening |

just wondered if you have ever thought maybe building a set of dies and just stamping a whole new car would have been easier.
i'm kidding, im amazed at the level of detail, and inspired that you are able to find the motivation to keep going on such a huge project |

Thanks from me as well for following along and your support. When It comes to the details Jason and I spent lots of time doing research behind the scenes trying to look at tons of photographs, books, other cars, and comparing all this data. We see lots of variance out there, especially with cars that are restored; So we try to use the early original factory or stock photographs we find as our “Bible”. Jason is very detail oriented and thats why we think alike when it comes to the work and why I chose him for this project. Just a few days ago we had one of our meetings to discuss various areas on the car and where we were at with each of them. Jason spent probably 30 minutes with me just discussing his thoughts on a small detail that will probably not even be visible once the car is assembled. But he and I are both the type of people that will say “....but WE will know if its not right!” Its a fun and educating process. That is why we value any and all input from those knowledgable folks following this thread. I think both Jason and I feel that same way that we are just doctors and caretakers of this car. Its from a unique part of VW’s history and deserves to be done right. It will probably be around long after he and I are gone, so we want it to be right. |

The strap desig wore/cut a notch into the inner structure, then curls and tears the outer skin over time when the door is fully opened. Any additional thoughts or photos would be fantastic.

this is absolutely correct. youll just have to straighten all that bent metal out and make sure the hole is the correct dimensions. Very poor design indeed but these cars were not meant to last 60-70 years like we are making them!
I love the simplicity of it though.
I think I have some NOS door check straps somewhere, not sure if they are the same in 47 as in 50/51? _________________ drive your split. |
