I want to run disc brakes on my 56 oval, but with so many options available I wanted to see what people are using and the pros and cons of the available options.

Thanks in advance!

I use CB performance discs. Braking power is good, downside is the wider track, the car is heavier on the steering, and it rubs the fenders when cornering and braking/feather down at the same time. Use 155-15 tires.
Will try other rims in front with more ET, from T2 or T3.

I want to run 17"x7.5" wheels with a 5x112 bolt pattern, I am also narrowing my beam 4" with air ride. I found a kit for around 400.00 new but the calipers look small. I have been looking at other manufacturers but the prices are super high. I get, "you get what you pay for", I just want to know what I'm getting myself into before I spend a ton of money.

I bought my kit from Moore Parts...Porsche/Chevy pattern rotors, calipers are the standard you see, not Wilwood or Brembo. They made the track about 5/8" wider per side...I also have 4" beam with 5" rims, but 3.5" backspace

This is by far one the best improvements I have made. Front discs make a huge difference in stopping power.

On the rear I installed Airkewld's kit (big $), but they are the only ones making rear discs with parking brake for early ovals

I guess they are Empi brand...

Airkewld do you offer a kit with a 5x112 bolt pattern?

We can do it custom, adds about $95 to order per axle. It would need to be a phone order and you would have a choice of 12mm or 14mm studs.

Do the rear disc brake kits make the rear measurements wider? If so how much wider?

Yes, I can’t remember the exact amount though. My 6” rims with 3.5 BS would no longer fit and I had to go to a 4.5” BS

Has anyone tried the zero offset kit from Aircooled.net? I suppose they wouldn't be zero offset on an oval because the stock 30mm wide front brakes mean the track is 15mm narrower (7.5mm per side) compared to 1958 and newer 40mm wide front brakes. I was wondering if they managed to keep the offset change to a minimum and how it worked for brake balance, using the Rabbit calipers.

That zero offset kit looks just like the EMPI or AC Industries kits that use Rabbit calipers. I've had experience with one of each. I had to grind a bit on the backside of the rotor castings to keep them from rubbing link pin carrier but other than that they work fine. There was a running discussion in the 58 up Bug section about this type and some people reported the caliper bracket flexing under use but I didn't see it happen.

I did measure the difference once installed and I don't have the numbers but I do remember it was close to stock on a 63 Bug, maybe within 5mm wider than drums. I didn't do a measurement on my Oval because at the time I didn't have stock Oval drums up front.

The balance front to back, the only time I noticed a problem was when backing down a gravel driveway there the fronts would lock up but that seemed a small price to pay.
