I am going to get some custom rear struts for my hatch. The main reason is to prevent the hatch from opening so high which ends up hitting the top of the garage door opening and scratching it.
The replacement struts I got from GW are about 20.5" extended. I measure about 19.25" as high enough without hitting the top. They will match the ends also.
The one factor I can't figure out is the force to use. GW says theirs are 150lbs each and for whatever reason it's way too strong for my hatch. The hatch flys open and takes quite some pull to close it. The company I am working with says the stock force was 140lbs, but that seems too high, maybe the stronger one was 140 and the lesser one is ???.
I called both VW and BD but neither knows what VW's original force was. Supposedly the original force was such that you could lift it to a certain height and it would stay there. I like that idea.
Anyways, any ideas on what the stock force was?
BTW I am working with Liftsupportsdepot.com. They seem pretty good to work with. About $18 per strut. _________________ 83.5 233K. GW 2.3, SS exhaust, My German Frau named her Stefi |

I have one strong and one weak from Van Cafe and it will sit anywhere you want it to. _________________ '84 Vanagon GL 1.9 WBX

couldn't you make a limiting strap from some nylon paracord?
so that it would stop it at a preset position, but fold up nicely when you close it?
nearly free option. _________________
