Quite possibly the worst & most time consuming part of this endeavor is cleaning, media blasting & painting all of the parts before reassembling it.
Here's one of the heat exchangers before...

And here's the other side cleaned, painted, & installed.

Satisfying though?
I can never remember how bad the 'before' was until I find the picture!
Good work!

I'll say it again.. I LOVE this build!

It should be a sticky, or something..

HERE we have what NEEDS done to any of these busses put back into service.

ESPECIALLY the "restored" Rolling Eyes ones..

I can't tell you how many times I have done a mechanical re-do on an aircooler just like this.
Back in the day, this was SOP.

Just last weekend,
Was at a place with a few new bus people camped out,
Geeking out with some young 'new-timers', and was aghast at their attitude.
Same with a show I went to recently..

It was all about awnings and carpet and seat covers and infotainment and paint and solar panels and such 'important' things.

When I asked anyone if they had ever taken out their motor, or made sure their cooling tin was in place,
You woulda thought I farted at the party.

The last VW show, I counted four motors with thermostats installed.

If your bus is an opportunity for you to take selfies with a prop,
Then this is all well and good,
But,

Anyone who is going to actually drive their bus needs to look at this thread.

Otherwise,
You might just use up all of your 'sad face' emoticons on your next road trip.

Good work!

To a degree, I can't wait to enjoy driving it, I'd love to make some traveling threads with it like yours Very Happy

Thanks Clatter, I'm glad that this thread is both informative & interesting. I hope to pass on some of the techniques to those just getting started & show them these old VWs really simple & fun to work on & drive.

It also helps when others inform you when you've done something incorrectly. Ive owned & worked on thousands of VWs & Audis but I work on newer & newer models as the years progress, the last bus I owned was a '72 high roof in the 80's (that was my apprenticeship in the repair industry.) so I might be off on some of the intricacies of the air cooled & fully expect & appreciate any input when I screw it up. Very Happy

After shopping around, I found that the dealer was actually one of the better prices on the ball joint fixtures so I special ordered the fixtures to replace the ball joints.

I couldn't justify spending $170 or whatever that fixture cost for a one time ball joint replacements on my bus.

Here's what I did.

Thanks Bill, I've done it that way but sometimes its just nice having the right tool instead of wearing & breathing all the dust from the metal & cutting wheels. Also, if it saves me the time of removing the trailing arms from the Bus, then it has paid for itself with the first use.

I managed to rub a few more minutes together & cleaned & repacked at least one of the CV joints & installed a new boot on the passenger side axle assembly.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

I kinda like the CV joint "hubcaps", I can do one at a time as time allows & don't have to worry about the other side getting contaminated.

Just a few more minutes of work, I got the last CV joint cleaned & packed & assembled the axle & installed it.

And then cleaned, sand blasted, and then painted one of the valve covers.

A suggestion? Pull the bails off and sand blast and paint them too. If you don't they will scratch the crap out of the pretty valve covers.

But then he won't be able to paint them again, any excuse to spend more time wrenching!

I wonder if sliding some heat shrink on them would last?

Still working on it, just hadn't gotten there yet, just for you.

But I'm pretty certain that the covers are gonna get scratched anyway.

Wow.. what a bunch of pessimists! Laughing

I scratched the crap out of a set of freshly powdered coated valve covers due to rusty bails. I then blasted the bails and sanded them buttery smooth and then painted them. I applied just a touch of grease on the areas of the bails that ride up and on the valve covers. No scratches!

Remember people, the glass isn't have empty it's half full! Wink

Nothing exciting, I torqued the rocker shafts, adjusted the valves, greased up the new valve cover gaskets & installed the valve covers & bails.
