Thanks for the pics of the work and congrats on the find.
I keep toying with the idea of finding an early slicktop to make into my forest road "ridge runner". I spend a lot of time in WNC. _________________ Godspeed

Thanks Ultralite. Yes, a Bus is well suited for trail running. I used to camp deep in the trails with my '72 highroof, the only time I got it stuck, two of the three 4x4s that my buddies had got stuck a few times just trying to get to where I was. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

LOL, thanks scrivyscriv.
I started replacing the brakes, what's this waxy stuff VW used in the bearings?
I finally coerced the brake drum off.
The first side I tried to remove I found that this Bus uses brass adjuster stars, I'll have to go back to that one due to the fact that it's still stuck (& destroyed).
Check it out, original wheel cylinders too
I had to heat up the flare nut on this line too to avoid twisting & destroying the line.
And here it is with new wheel cylinders & shoes.

The next thing that I dealt with is replacing the drivers door glass, what a PITA! I really wish that I had known that the window regulator, scrapers & vent window gaskets all had to be removed just to get the glass in the door, I would have sourced them before tearing it all apart. While still not water tight, it's a start towards keeping the birds & cats out.
Anyone want a vintage bird's nest?
I wish I could get potato chips as crunchy as that headliner is. |
Not trying to be argumentative, but you actually can replace the door glass without removing all of that. At least I was able to on my '71. As I recall you lower the regulator ( crank it down) , pull off the inner handles, pop off the door card, and maneuver the glass up from the bottom through the inside of the door. _________________ If you haven't bled on them, you haven't worked on them.

I've learned that if I can at least drive it, I can do little bits at a time without being overwhelmed with a complete tear down. Eating that elephant one bite at a time. I don't care if it's ugly but I'm not going to sacrifice safety & dependability.
I got the windshield gasket from Rock Auto for $23 but it was the only option for gaskets they had. Wolfsburg West has all the gaskets with or without the grooves & has the trim too. |
Any feedback on that URO brand gasket? In Volvo land, the cooling group products from them are horrible _________________ .ssS! |

Thanks woofer. Sorry, sarcasm doesn't translate well. It's been a while since I've seen grease turn solid enough that it could crack & hold it's shape. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

Hey TomWesty, I tried several different ways to get it in the door without dismantling the whole damn thing but the regulator was always in the way of getting the glass completely in the door without potentially damaging the regulator since it was held captive between the inner door & vent wing frame, or breaking the glass. Besides, this gave me a chance to flip the regulator over & properly lube it up. The regulator works SOOO much better now. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

It actually fits the windshield, body, & trim quite well but since I just installed it, I don't know how well it'll hold up long term (especially under heat & cooling system pressures ). It definitely seals a lot better than what was in it. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

Sorry wasn't being sarcastic just an English saying knackered=no good
When I used to work on trucks (big rigs) years ago you used to see grease like that or the complete opposite and it was like oil and used to run out. _________________

woofer, I wasn't accusing you of being sarcastic, I was being sarcastic when I mentioned the "waxy" grease .
Now that I think we have that straightened out, here's some more progress on the crusty pig.
Here's another trick that I've learned over the years working with crusty crap.
Over the years, you'll get the feel for how much torque a fastener will accept before it strips. Quality tools will increase the amount of force you can apply but corrosion will make the fasteners require more force than they are capable of withstanding. At this point, heat is your friend.
Here's a brake hose that is just a bit too tight so I heat it up, the problem is that the heat required causes the rubber on the hose to liquefy & it builds up pressure in the crimp connection & EXPLODES like a firecracker. Be ready for this but go ahead & heat it until it does. If you do not, IT WILL EXPLODE while you are working on it. WEAR EYE PROTECTION, WEAR GLOVES, WEAR LONG SLEEVES.
Sometimes they "fizzle", most of the time they "pop", this one went with a "BANG"
Here it is after removing the hose end.
Then work some antiseize between the line & flare nut
And installing the new hose.

These are the brass adjusters that we're giving me such a hard time on the front right, they had seized & wouldn't release until I finally heated the wheel cylinder through the adjuster hole in the drum.
Could these be one year only? I've not seen them on any other bugs or busses.
I swiped a pair of adjusters from a bug I had laying around & cleaned their threads with a tap .
Since the adjuster studs were different between the Bus & Bug, I cleaned up the Bus ones with a die.
And used plenty of antiseize on those too.

On to the rear brakes.
Fortunately this went much easier.
Until I found out that parking brake cables are '68 only.

A couple of my "roller" tires are no longer rolling so that pushed me to get a couple of the wheels ready for tires.
Quite a few people get finicky when it comes to the stampings on the wheels so I made sure to clean those as best as I could.
Then ensured that the crevasse between the center & hoop were as clean as I could get them.
Then painted the back & outer hoop black.
Then taped off the edges.
Then painted the front with Krylon Dover white.

Oddly, I kept them & the wheel cylinders & plan on keeping the master cylinder with hopes of possibly sleeving the hydraulic parts & rebuilding everything. Do you know if anyone is sleeving & rebuilding VW brake components? _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

So today I decided to find out how bad the cargo floors were & spent some time sweeping & vacuuming all the glass & debris out.
Then I took one of my prybars & knocked the blistered rust off the floors.
And then followed that with a stiff wire brush and another vacuuming. It didn't look too bad once the scale was knocked off & cleaned up.
After yet another vacuuming, I brushed on some Ospho.
I'm hoping the phone wire was a 70s addition of an intercom system so the driver could communicate with the rear passengers. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

I got some new sneakers for the crusty pig.
& spent a little time trying to find the original paint.
Here's an idea of what it looks like compared to yellow legal paper.
