I drill drain holes in bottom of my front turn signal lenses. Maybe they stayed dry when they were new and shiny, but I don't trust them to now. _________________ If you haven't bled on them, you haven't worked on them.

That sounds like a good idea.. I opened mine up today to get the running lights working, and there was gunk/mold inside.. obviously water got in there and stayed.

There isn't a simple external relay in the '68.
Today I cleaned & refreshed the reflector on the passenger side.
And would you believe the Crusty Pig is now legal?!? I Shanghaied the tag bracket from another project & mounted the tag properly.

Thank you sir! I used Rustoleum semi gloss on the engine tins & high temp grill paint on the heat exchangers.
I replaced the drivers side headlight with a Hella H4 unit, but forgot to take pics.
The only thing keeping me from driving the Crusty Pig was the "roller tires" which were barely that. Every time that I drove the thing around the block I would find more cracks & chunks missing.
I finally got the rest of the new sneakers mounted & installed on it.
I put about 120 miles on the Crusty Pig last night & this morning, my son wasn't very impressed getting dropped off at school this morning. It was a good damned thing that I thought ahead enough to toss the floor mat back in the cab, his ever-so-dominant self preservation gene probably would have dictated that we take a different vehicle. As it was, he seemed pretty fixated on watching the ground pass by through the hole that he could see between the mat & the wheel tub. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

Darn youngin'.. I tell ya!
Guess we grew up in a generation where it didn't matter what you drove or what you were seen in, but the fun in getting there, even if it was to school.
Thanks to you, I think I will start working back on my bug so I can drive my daughter to school one of these days. Just need to finish up some interior work and it will be presentable. |

WOW!
Those tires were OLD and dried out. Did you check how old they were with the date stamps on the tires? _________________ Contact me at [email protected]

As you said, OLD!
I got pulled by one of the towns finest last night, it seems there was a report of a suspicious vehicle that kept pulling into a parking lot, turning around & backing up to a building, I laughed & explained that it was me & that I was using the glass store front to check the operation of the brake lights.
I decided to stop & take a pic of the Crusty Pig in a tobacco field on the way to work before they finished harvesting for the year.
& then at one of the few stations that sells non-ethanol fuel.

Mom took me to school in either a squareback or the bus I've been driving for the last 25 years. She's been gone since '93 but I'm sure she would be happy that the bus (Mae) is still on the road. _________________ If you haven't bled on them, you haven't worked on them.

While I was taking the "little one" (5'11" 14y/o) to school yesterday & noticed that his seatbelt wasn't working very well, so I sourced some seat belts out of a 2002 Jetta to install in the Crusty Pig.
First I removed the latch assemblies off the front seats.
Then I removed this little spacer that slides in the seat track.
Once removed, I unbolted the latch assembly from the bus.
Then I replaced it with the one from the Jetta using the bolt from the Jetta & the washer from the bus's outer seatbelt anchor point.
Then I removed the seat belts from the rear of the car being sure to save all hardware from the Jetta, the one thing that remained the same between the bus & Jetta, is the bolt size & thread pitch.
Then I mounted the lower outer seat belt anchor point using the Jetta hardware.
Then attached the upper mount using the Jetta bolt, washer, & spacer sleeve AND the original washer from the bus.
Then I mounted the retractors to the divider wall, I still need to get a piece of steel plate to reinforce the sheet metal & I'll take pics & update as I finish.
Here's the new belts installed. I cut off the wiring harness from the seat belt latch assembly.

Nice use of Junkyard parts. Though, if that jetta was crashed; you aren't supposed to re-use safety parts from a crashed car. They may be fine, they may not be. _________________ Brutis Patches Izabich: 1970 VW Transporter - 1776cc DP

It was a 83,000 mile car that I had due to a failed auto trans, I used the rear belts due to both their compatible length & the total lack of wear. One could still source these components new from the dealer for around $500-$600 if they were so inclined, bolts not included (and I'd definitely go that route than trust one of these aftermarket "made to resemble original equipment" aftermarket belt assemblies (because "made in China" works so well for the rest of the shit that is available for our busses.), I doubt that they carry any sort of certification.) .
The newer belts, retractors, & latch assemblies work a hell of a lot better than the dried up 50 year old wads of webbing that I had to work with, in fact, I'd guarantee that a set that had been through an accident would be safer than what was in the Crusty Pig. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

I got tired of looking at the drooping visors.
One day, I'll get some clips. Until then I'll use these that I made out of a coat hanger.
First I made a loop for the mounting screw.
Then folded it back on itself.
Then made a hook for the visor & a clip to hook over the frame
Then mounted them.
No more droopy visors.
After that, I lubed the accelerator pedal, brake pedal, & clutch pedal pivot points with some spray chain lube. No more squeaking. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

I spent a little more time unearthing the original paint today.
And then drove into a tobacco field to try to catch a pic of the sunset.
The Crusty Pig is doing great, I put about 600 miles on it over the last five or six days. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

Yes sir, that was the plan from the beginning.
So I picked away at the Crusty Pig again. I adjusted the brakes & retorqued the wheels.
Then I spent some more time with the window frame, I applied some Ospho, then primed it with some weld-thru primer.
Then, using the nubs left over from the spot weld cutting bits, I lined up the track & welded it back on.
After that, I replaced the instrument cluster illumination bulbs & drove home.
Man I love those Hella E-code H4s.

Today I decided that I'd reinstall the rear bumper, so I lifted the rear apron so I could straighten the mounting points & that's when I remembered my statement about not knowing how much longer the dry rotted boards holding up the battery were going to last...
Not much!
Not wanting to cut the rear corner & battery tray out yet, I used my new battery tray as a template to fab up an old piece of sheet metal scavanged from another project.
It ain't purty but it'll do.
