After fitting the carrier bar & adjusting where the frame mounts were to go, I finished making the frame mounts.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

And then attached the inner ones to the carrier bar.

For today's Crusty Pig update, I cut the carrier bar to length & welded the outer frame mounts to it.

Then I fitted it back to the Bus.

Tomorrow I'll have to make the gussets & weld them to the carrier bar.

Probably wouldn't hurt to throw some more passes on there. What kinda of welder are you using.

OOoo! looking good! you're making me want to do this. But I have years (hopefully) to go until my new engine takes a crap on me.

It's a Hobart Handler 135 flux core MIG. The welds ain't the purtiest but they have good penetration. Here they are cleaned up.

There not bad. I would run a few more passes and a little hotter. Some of the welds look straight up and down and that creates what is known as a stress riser. You want a perfect 45 on the weld bead and the weld on your pipe to the plate...the weld should come out on the plate from the nipple 1.5 times the thickness off the plate then a 45 up to the nipple. I would do one pass connecting the plate and the pipe them one pass connecting plate to previous weld bead with half of the bead on the plate and half on the weld bead then one more with half on previous weld bead then other half on pipe. Should make for a great weld that would last a long time. Follow the same theory on all your welds. 45 is the key. No concave weld beads either

Today's Crusty Pig update consists of some more carrier bar progress. I made some gussets for the body mounts.

I decided to try to close up one of the pneumonia holes in the back of the Crusty Pig so I painted the repaired window flange...

And after fighting the trim into the new gasket, I stuffed the window back into the hole.

That trim really can be a bitch, but I think the results are totally worth it. Keep it up!

Thanks! That's quite the compliment coming from the millennial bus whisperer. Laughing

Y'all remember the filler piece I removed from the sliding door track?

I repurposed it as the engine mount support gussets.

First, I made horseshoes out of it & then used my hole saw to cut to length.

Fitted them to the support bar.

Since the weather hasn't been cooperating I haven't been able to do much with the Crusty Pig so I decided to start removing the body side of the harness so I can start paring it down to the bare necessities.

Well, I got impatient waiting for parts & couldn’t quite bring myself to hack the Crusty Pig to install a hatch so I pulled the 1.8t out & stuffed an engine from a Beetle back in... Back to cruising in the crustiness & exploring rural routes bypassed & forgotten by those taking the new highways

I spent some more time doing basic maintenance on the Crusty Pig, I had a headlight fail so I finally got around to installing the other H4. After fighting the trim ring, I found that I’ll need to repair/replace the headlight bucket on this side too.

Oh look, I can see the seat stand through there.

Oh well, screw it for now, headlight works.

After that I tried to replace some of the dash illumination bulbs which turned into a true test of patience, removing one bulb turns into replacing several other bulb holders due to the fact that they’re all brittle & just touching one means that it’ll turn to dust.

Since the new engine is chugging merrily along, I decided to do a bit of maintenance to it & adjusted the valves yesterday.

Then, on the way home, I decided to do something about that pain in may ass (literally) & stopped by a home decore store & brought some funkiness to the junkiness with some Outdoor furniture cusions.

Crusty Pig update, in my "IDGAF, let's stuff an engine in it & see what happens", I literally pulled an engine out of a beetle that had been sitting for 12+ years, pulled the exhaust so I could install the mustache bar, bolted the old exhaust back on, removed the fan shroud to check for nests, rebuilt the carb, put it back together & crammed it back in the hole. Shortly after getting it back together I started seeing some oil leaks and now it looks like I get to pull the engine back out & install oil cooler seals & a main seal.

No big deal, I knew that it was a probability that such things would need to be addressed, but I wasn't going to throw any more parts at it until I knew that it was going to be a good unit. So far I've gotten about 700 miles on it & enjoying toodling around in it. I even broke down & replaced the 12+ year old generator belt yesterday & adjusted the front brakes again.

Nice. Keeping with the theme.. Cool

Careful with actually adjusting the valves,
It's a slippery slope.

I learned a valuable lesson today, if you don't have the front grille on (or the screen behind it has deteriorated.), don't leave the fresh air doors open when you park. It seems that wasps are quite fond of those passages & they're none too happy by the time they're forced out of the dash vents at speed. Mad

So, I used 12.5 gallons in 320 miles which gets me 25.6 MPG, that's almost 10MPG better than my Eurovan.
