Yes sir, I was quite pleased.
After work yesterday, I set off on one of my VW hunting/spotting trips & re-found a horde that I had forgotten it's location & have been trying to track back to for the last 5-6 years. This time, I was even able to track down the owner & although he wasn't willing to sell anything (yet? ), we had a great conversation & have at the very least, found a fellow dub-fiend.
After rolling over yet another 100 miles in great weather, the Crusty Pig was merrily rattling right on along.
(The Crusty Pig looks great from this perspective.)
Imagine my surprise when on the way to lunch that the steering wheel just starts spinning freely as I pull out of my parking spot. Fortunately, as any trusty VW would/should, it also did this where I had access to parts & tools.
Apparently, at some point in it's life, someone replaced the steering box & didn't get the cinch bolt lined up with the indexing slot & forced the (incorrect) bolt over the splines on the steering box. Without a nut on the backside to cinch it down, it eventually wore through & spun on the shaft.

Since the steering coupler was misaligned, this meant that I had to remove the steering wheel & reclock it.
While I was at it, I went ahead & sorted out the horn wiring & replaced the horn also. Woohooo! Now I can honk at the assholes that just have to get around me & cut me off at the light just to sit there & stare at their phone through half a light cycle.
This morning, the Crusty Pig went to it’s first VW show, the SEVWA Big Bug Shootout. Yesterday was cold & rainy (which was a good thing, otherwise all of the cars would have been yellow from all the pollen.) & there was ice on the windshield when I started out, but the Crusty Pig performed great & while it was chilly and downright brutal when the wind blew, the event turned out decent even though I had to bail out around 11:30am. More people recognized it from this thread than I would have thought & it was great meeting everyone. Here’s some pics of the event...
While at the show, one of the vendors said that his dog thought that all of the VW people smelled like old VWs, at which point I said "yeah, so we all smell like exhaust fumes & rat piss?"

Yesterday, I removed the speedometer cable from the back of the instrument cluster & shot some spray oil into it due to the fact that the cable was starting to make noise & cause the needle to bounce, as per usual, I managed to upset the oil pressure light & had to spend another 1/2 hour trying to get that working again.
With just over a year into this, I now have a running/driving, daily driver that is dependable. While the Crusty Pig is not without it's flaws, I'm enjoying beating around in it & improving upon it as I want/need to. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

Well, I guess that lubing the cable was a bit too late, it worked great on the way home but when I went to work the next morning, I realized that the speedometer wasn’t working. I pulled the cable back out of th back of the cluster & sure enough, it was broken, so I sourced another.
And went about installing it.
Once in, I discovered that the reason that it broke was the the speedometer had seized, dammit! Fortunately, the bus came with another gauge cluster that I have been picking parts off of, so I went about swapping it out, let’s see how much more crap falls apart.
Once I got the speedometers out, they looked remarkably close in mileage at first glance.
At least the odometer stayed below 100,000 miles.
Hey, maybe I should clean those lenses before reassembling everything.
I got it all back together & sure as crap, I now get to figure out why the high beams no longer work.
Since I had to extract the cable remnants from the bearing cap, I went ahead & adjusted the bearings & front brakes while I was there. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

So I finally figured out where the issue was with the high beams not working, the ground wire to the back of the cluster broke. Now everything works again & the gauges look great.
Since I’m gaining a bit more faith in the engine, I decided to minimize my CO saturation levels & try to repair the exhaust leaks. I removed the rear apron.
Then the muffler.
Then I had to drill, tap & Helicoil one hole.
After reassembling everything, I took the Crusty Pig on a VW hunt. It’s sooo much quieter. After about 120 miles I didn’t spot any ACVWs but we got to check out lots of rural roads & neat sights. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

It sounds neat but that would probably be 9+ hours of driving staying off the interstate, I think I’ll have to pass.
Thanks though.
Today’s improvement session consisted of removing my steering dripper...
And replacing it with a new damper.

Huh? I don’t think it would take 9 hrs to drive anywhere in the entire state. Back roads from Raleigh to Charlotte are 3 hrs, max. I’ve done it plenty of times. _________________

This morning I finally got around to tossing a rear bumper on that I found a couple of months ago that is in much better shape.
As you can see, I'm still chipping away at the paint.
It even has a '90s Bob Marley sticker on it.

Warning!!! Purists... avert your eyes!
Ok, since the wife & daughter continually ignore my suggestion to not put their weight on the floor of the cab & instead get into the bus in a manner that resembles a dog having to turn around three to four times before it can lay down, I decided to plug my contraband ejection port & do something with the coffee stained doily that would be a 35+ year old patch job.
I cut out the previous patch.
After removing the patch, I cleaned up the top of the frame rail, slathered it down with some Ospho, & shot it with some primer & paint.
It ain’t purty, but I trimmed some 20 gauge hobby metal from the local hardware store & stitched it back in place.
This will have to do until I can get one of those pallets of funky green shtuff. At least I don’t have to worry about one of them falling through. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

I converted it to modern retractable belts from a Jetta. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

Friday, I pulled the pedal pan out of the back of the bus & cleaned it with a wire brush and treated it with some Ospho.
Then I painted the top side so it wouldn't continue to rust.
Today, I decided to fit it to the Bus but knowing that there was thin/weak spot in the accelerator cable,
I went ahead & replaced the cable.
While I was under the front, I saw that the pitman arm nut was missing it's cotter pin, after ensuring that the nut was tight, I installed a new cotter pin & installed the pedal pan.

Isn't that some shit?!? Yesterday I preemptively replaced the throttle cable to avoid having roadside issues after putting the pedal pan on & this morning the clutch pedal started getting vague & dropped closer to the floor.
No visible issues with it last night, it just waited until I put the pedal pan on to show it's ass. I must say however, at least it got me to work. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

So... to get back home I’m forced to drop the pedal pan & replace the cable
I dug out the replacement cable that I got from Wolfsburg West.
Rolled up under the Crusty Pig in the rain & proceeded to remove the old cable.
Why am I trying to twist this damned wingnut off?!?
Much easier.
Now why didn’t I get the replacement clevis pin from Wolfsburg West when I ordered the rest of the cables?
At least I can now get rid of this goofy assed shim job meant to compensate for the wrong year clutch cable.
I had to remove the lever arm to remove the bolt through the cable.
After getting the cable threaded back through & the lever bolted back to the clutch pedal, I kept fighting the weight of the pedal while trying to start the wing nut again so I took my vice grips & stopped the pedal from dropping.
While fighting with it for 45 minutes in the rain, I was questioning just why in the hell I keep putting myself through this when I’ve got two other perfectly dependable cars to drive. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

On the way home, I decided to take the Crusty Pig for a quick jaunt down the power lines & halfway through decided to video it, sorry for the bouncy video.
