I have thought of this myself, just because I take some 400+ mile freeway drives in very hot weather (like to the last 3 Kubel Treffens).
I thought an aluminum frame with the same thickness and dimensions as the stock glass could be fabricated with a hinged inner frame to hold a slightly smaller glass windshield. The wipers would be a concern, but even a 1 inch opening at the base of the windshield would let in a lot of air.
I even made a sketch a long time ago.
Maybe a better approach would be to fabricate a windshield frame with a taller bottom section to accommodate a couple of small cowl vents between the wiper shafts; sort of like the Citroen 2CV.
I guess it would take a highly skilled fabricator to make this happen (wouldn't you say Ron )
Just another unrealized dream. |

So why the split? Was the glass not manageable as one piece?
Do you intend to just leave the wipers off?
Unusual blend of styling cues with those wheels and fender skirts....
Anyway it looks cool.
Have fun, Mondshine |

This still makes no sense to me, why not just fold down the windshield? |

Like Mondshine stated... what about the wiper system?
And like a friend told me when I asked him why he was going to put huge off road tires on his pickup truck: "Cause I CAN!!"
...Maybe DaBomb did it 'cause he could.

Here are the other two pictures dabomb posted:
I think it is a great idea. Here in California it is illegal to drive with the windshield down. And I know on a hot day here in SoCal, a VW with safaris allows for a little air flow to keep things cool! (pun intended ) |

This is the sort of thing I had in mind for a taller bottom windshield frame with a 2CV style vent. Seems like even a 1" tall vent would let in plenty of air.
Always dreaming, Mondshine |

From a utilitarian standpoint (not sure that's what dabomb is after necessarily), the safari split windows can be used more easily when the top is up. _________________ Now: 2003 New Beetle Turbo S / 1990 Single Cab Transporter / 2014 Tiguan R-Line 4motion / 2013 Tiguan S / 2002 Golf GLS TDI

This was a timely topic as I have been doing research and design ideas for a safari window on my thing. I don't think it is to difficult. I actually pulled my window frame off today to begin the rebuild. |

The windshield may not have enough clearance to fold down onto the trunk with the spare tire mounted the way it is. I can also see advantages of the safari window when you're driving with the top up. _________________ 1963 Beetle
