I was updating a build thread in the 68 & up forum but since the car is now running I am starting a thread here. The car is a 74 standard, it has early fenders, aprons, hood and decklid and sits on a king pin pan so it looks like a pre 66 (with side vents) whatever, we did all this work nearly 30 years ago and it still looks decent today. The car sat for about 24 years, mostly outside, under various car covers waiting for someone to regain interest. Last September I decided I needed a hobby so I jumped back into the VW scene, so far it's been me working on my car in the garage, but that's better than sitting on the couch. I have reconnected with a few old friends from back in the day that are still in the industry, that's been nice and I look forward to getting this thing out to some VW events and weekend gatherings, I guess I miss hanging out with car guys. I will update this as I complete the pile of remaining tasks to make this a capable cruiser and occasional drag racer.
So here it is 6 months of off & on in the garage later, running but not yet ready to drive to far, my 74:

Got the carbs close enough to idle and drive so I headed over to an old friends shop to get the flange on my quite packs rotated to fit my merged Four Tuned header. Nice to drive the old bug again. I didn't put many miles on this car back in the day but it drives just like my oval did. I also replace the fuel inlet hoses, fixed my tach and oil pressure gauge and put the deck lid back on complete with a spring (never used to keep those on)
Here's a terrible cell phone pic just because:

I've been able to put a few miles on this old bug in the past month or so, it runs and drives really well, haven't had any issues what-so-ever. I'm looking for some low back seats to replace the Beards that are in the car now, if any of you AZ guys have some stashed away you might be willing to part with, pm me. I also ordered a Berg shifter, the old aluminum short shifter in this car has got to go, I wish I had kept more parts from my old car especially the Berg shifter. I still have a mile long list of thing to do but it sure is cool being able to drive it between projects. _________________ My Build: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=665399&highlight=

It's been hot here in AZ, afternoon highs have been between 115-120 degrees so it's tough to get into the garage which is probably 140 degrees but I managed to brave and hour or so yesterday. I installed some new Empi door panels, the fit is OK, most of the holes line up, a few don't, the materials they are made from is very soft in the heat and they have a few wrinkles but all in all they are alright for the money and this isn't a show car. I was driving with the bare door before so this is a vast improvement, I also fixed a couple of door rattles before I closed them up. obligatory pic:
I had a chance to get a good look at the Berg linkage I bought a few week ago, they have replace the crossbar brackets with rod ends which is nice, & the new casting for the center bar is very nice too. They still come with the old end links for the carb attachment, I may change those out to rod ends as well, we'll see how it works first. It's supposed to cool off a little so I may get a change to install this over the weekend.

Added some deck lid standoff plates and spring kit to let more fresh air in from the top. I'm thinking I may replace the transaxle, this one has a close ratio 3rd and 4th with a 4.38:1 ring and pinion, with these tires that equates to 3000 rpm @ 50 mph in fourth gear, that coupled with the spool take a little fun out of putting around in the car, but it's adds a bunch of fun when you get on it, dunno, probably wait till the big motor is done and decide then.
I might just need some taller rear tires, I'm going to look into some 205/70's _________________ My Build: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=665399&highlight=

I’ve looked at a couple of cars with 205’s, that’s more of the look this car had back in the day but I’ll have to wait to make that purchase. For now I’m just cleaning up some stuff that bugs me. The passenger seat sat about 10” ahead of the drivers seat so I evened them up:
I also got around to painting the quite pack I bought from Bill last year, I think it cleaned up pretty well:
Lastly I swapped out the old amp meter for a volt meter and added an oil temp gauge in place of the old nonfunctioning head temp gauge which apparently are no longer available. That’s all for now _________________ My Build: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=665399&highlight=

It's looking really good. It's such a time warp machine. The muffler looks good too.
The next time you're out and about in it, PM me. I love to hear that muffler again. It's been since 1987 since it was last used on my 1835. I love the sound. _________________ Contact me at [email protected]

Took a trip out to Volksfest Saturday & walked off with a plaque and shirt from Doug's Bugs, thanks for the love Fish! It was great to see some old friends, hard to catch up on 20+ years in a couple of hours but worth every minute.
I honestly just paid the $5 extra to park inside so I didn't have to walk to the parking lot. Thanks to everyone that remembered the shop & the car, I loved hearing the stories from those of you that I had a chance to talk to. _________________ My Build: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=665399&highlight=

I saw your bug at the show but didn't see you. I was hoping to hear your engine and my old muffler for nostalgia reasons. I don't think I had run that muffler since the 80's. You did a nice job cleaning it up. It's perfect for your car. _________________ Contact me at [email protected]
